Explained: Why Johnny Depp is unlikely to appear in Sherlock Holmes 3?
2 min readRobert Downey Jr. most recently portrayed legendary investigator Sherlock Holmes in the 2011 film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Fans, however, have never given up hope for a third film in the saga. Sherlock Holmes 3 was set to be released on December 22, 2021, at one time. However, the film did not appear on that date because COVID prevented it from going into production.
The third Sherlock Holmes film is now again in the spotlight, due to rumours that Downey wants Johnny Depp to feature in it. The more you investigate this rumour, the more bogus it becomes. It’s based on an ancient narrative, and subsequent events appear to have rendered it even less likely to be genuine. Here’s where the allegation comes from — and why it might not be true.
Why Johnny Depp is unlikely to appear in Sherlock Holmes 3?
Many outlets have reported on the story, although not all have provided sources. Alternatively, they may have cited it from another publication that did not include the original source. The Johnny Depp rumour started with a National Enquirer piece from August 2020. “Johnny Depp and Robert have a very special 30-year friendship that dates back to their days as crazy Hollywood hell-raisers… Robert believes Johnny Depp deserves the same opportunity to redeem himself as he did “according to an unnamed source referenced in the post.
This comment is difficult to verify because it comes from an unknown source, and the Enquirer is not usually the most credible of sources. “The Enquirer’s covers typically feature comments about celebrities that are severely deceptive, though libel-law-compliant, as well as claims about politicians that are blatant falsehoods,” according to a 2017 New Yorker story about the magazine. There is no proof that the quote in the Enquirer is false. However, we are unlikely to see Depp in Sherlock Holmes 3 anytime soon.
