Recent reports have suggested that US President Joe Biden might be contemplating withdrawing from the upcoming presidential race. According to a New York Times report, several individuals close to Biden have indicated that he is beginning to accept the possibility that he may not be able to secure a win in the November 5 election.

However, this claim has been strongly refuted by Biden’s campaign. Cedric Richmond, Biden’s campaign co-chair, told MSNBC that the report is “absolutely wrong.” He emphasized, “The president has said that he is running and it’s the end of story.”

Despite this denial, whispers within Democratic circles suggest mounting pressure on Joe Biden to step aside. Prominent figures such as former President Barack Obama, ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are reportedly concerned about Biden’s prospects against former President Donald Trump. These leaders believe that Biden’s declining health, unconvincing debate performances, and recent health scares could hinder the Democrats’ chances of retaining the White House.

Biden’s re-election bid has faced increasing skepticism. Insiders have mentioned that Biden is undergoing “soul searching” about continuing his campaign, and there is speculation that he might announce Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement. According to sources, Joe Biden has not yet made a final decision, but there is a growing realization that he might have to bow out.

Adding to the uncertainty, Joe Biden recently tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in isolation at his Delaware residence. Although his symptoms are reported to be mild, this health setback has intensified the debate within the Democratic Party about his ability to lead a rigorous campaign.

The situation is further complicated by procedural rules. If Biden were to step down before the Democratic National Convention in early August, the pledged delegates could vote for a new candidate. If no candidate wins a majority on the first ballot, the superdelegates would then participate in subsequent votes until a candidate secures a simple majority. If Biden were to resign or become incapacitated after the convention, the Democratic National Committee chair, Jaime Harrison, would consult with top party leaders to select a replacement.

The internal pressure on Biden to reconsider his candidacy has highlighted Vice President Kamala Harris as the most likely successor. Meena Bose, director of the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University, remarked that Harris is the “logical choice” given her experience and previous vetting process. Moreover, the substantial campaign funds already raised by Biden could be transferred to Harris’s campaign.

However, Harris also faces her own challenges, including low approval ratings and criticism from Republicans. Other potential Democratic contenders like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer have stated they would not run in 2024, making Harris the frontrunner if Joe Biden steps down.

While the Democratic Party grapples with these internal dilemmas, the Republican Party has demonstrated strong unity behind Trump, who is preparing to accept the Republican nomination. The contrasting scenarios between the two parties underscore the high stakes and uncertainty leading up to the 2024 presidential election.

As the situation evolves, the possibility of Joe Biden making a significant announcement regarding his re-election bid looms large. Whether he continues his campaign or steps aside, the decision will undoubtedly shape the future of the Democratic Party and the upcoming presidential race.
