Ed Asner, Emmy-Winning ‘Lou Grant’ Star, passes away at 91

Ed Asner, the famous character who earned seven Emmy Awards, has died. Ed won five of the Emmy Awards for playing the same character, the lovable but gruff newsman Lou Grant. The newsman was introduced on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, Ed also starred in famous movies like “Up” and “Elf”. Ed died at his Tarzana, Calif’s home on Sunday, aged 91.

The cause of the death is unspecified, Ed’s family confirmed the death reports via Twitter. Asner was the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1981 to 1985. Apart from acting, he also tried his hands at Politics. He supported issues like Unionism (the Air Traffic Controller’s Strike of 1981) and rights to save animals. He was once in a strike including American Military general El Salvador.

Asner was 40 when he got the role of Lou Grant, the idealistic head of the WJM fictional television newsroom. The newsroom was situated in Minneapolis and also, Lou was the boss of Ms. Moore’s Mary Richards. Ed decided his own fate and did a marvelous job in the Television Comedy series of Ms. Mary Tyler Moore Show. The television series continued on CBS from 1970 to 1977.

The show gave Ed Asner huge respect worldwide and global recognition. Asner was nominated as the best supporting actor in a comedy series every year at The Emmy Awards. He won the title of “Best Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series” in 1971, 1972, and 1975. In 1978 and 1980, Ed won the title of “Best Lead Actor” for the spin-off show “Lou Grant”. Asner was the first man ever to win Emmys for playing the same character in a drama series and a comedy series, both.

“Lou Grant” was a drama series, a spin-off of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. In the show, Mr.Grant returned to his first affair and the script included many abusive serious issues like Gang Rivalries, Domestic Abuse, Nursing Home Scandals, Cults, and Neo- Nazi groups. Ed Asner also appeared in the 1976 mini-series “Rich Man, Poor Man” as Nick Nolte’s. at last, he earned five Golden Globes.

Edward David Asner was born in Kansas City, Mo., on November 15th, 1929. He was the youngest child of the five siblings of Orthodox Jewish Immigrant Parents. Since childhood, Ed was interested in Drama and Acting. His last appearance was of a New York Psychologist in “The Garden Left Behind”.

The greatness and the charismatic shows he left behind will be cherished forever.
