The much-anticipated Minecraft movie teaser trailer, starring Hollywood heavyweights Jason Momoa and Jack Black, was released on September 4, 2024, sparking a whirlwind of reactions from content creators and fans alike. While many eagerly awaited the first glimpse of the live-action adaptation, reactions from popular Minecraft streamers and YouTubers have been far from unanimous.

One of the most notable critiques came from Minecraft star TommyInnit, a Twitch streamer with over seven million followers. Known for his comedic takes and love of the game, TommyInnit didn’t hold back in voicing his disappointment with the trailer’s design choices. He compared the animation of the Minecraft sheep to the infamous design of Sonic the Hedgehog in its first live-action film, which was widely criticized for its “realistic” look before a major redesign. TommyInnit posted a photo comparing the two, saying, “First Sonic. Now Minecraft Sheep. Realistic animation will ruin us all.” His post garnered over a million views, with many of his followers agreeing that the sheep’s animation clashed with the simplistic, blocky charm of the game.

TommyInnit didn’t stop at the sheep. Under the official Minecraft account’s post on X (formerly Twitter), he sarcastically suggested adding fur to the game’s iconic Creeper, a comment that was met with both laughter and concern from fans who fear the live-action film may deviate too far from the game’s original aesthetic. “Guys. Hear me out. Let’s give the Creeper FUR!” he wrote, alongside an image of the Creeper from the trailer.

Other Minecraft content creators echoed similar sentiments. Twitch streamer RTGame simply asked, “What have you done?” while YouTuber Omni added, “Looks terrible, we’ll be watching no matter what.” Fellow Minecraft YouTuber PhoenixSC summed up his feelings with a brief but clear response: “Nah man.”

Despite the wave of criticism, some creators were more optimistic. Popular streamer Quackity, who also has a massive following in the Minecraft community, expressed excitement for the film. In a humorous post, he shared an in-game screenshot and joked about securing three tickets to see the movie. Meanwhile, streamer Foolish Gamers quoted the viral “Revenge” parody song by CaptainSparklez, writing, “Creeper? Aww, man,” referencing the famous lyrics from the Minecraft music community.

YouTuber Slimecicle took a more playful approach, suggesting that the movie could be “saved” if they photoshopped Jack Black’s face into more scenes. His suggestion, though lighthearted, seemed to resonate with those who want to see more humor infused into the project, especially given Jack Black’s reputation for comedy.

The Minecraft movie has been a highly-anticipated project ever since Warner Bros. and Mojang first discussed it back in 2014. Given the game’s immense global popularity, fans had hoped the film would bring the beloved blocky world to life in a faithful and exciting way. However, the design choices featured in the trailer have left many content creators worried that the live-action adaptation may stray too far from the charm of the original game.

While reactions are mixed, one thing is certain: the Minecraft movie has captured the attention of the community, and whether loved or hated, it’s sure to generate plenty of discussion leading up to its release. Fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see how the movie shapes up after this initial teaser.
