Is Vivian Kent Based On A Real Person?
Yes, the ‘Inventing Anna’ journalist persona is based on real-life journalist Jessica Pressler. She did a lengthy piece on the real Anna Sorokin in 2018. The New York Magazine piece headlined ‘How Anna Delvey Fooled New York’s Party People,’ which was promptly snatched up by Netflix and showrunner Shonda Rhimes. Their motive was to bring the narrative to screen. Interestingly, another of Pressler’s New York Magazine stories, titled ‘The Hustlers at Scores,’ inspired the 2019 film ‘Hustlers.’
Pressler has contributed to magazines such as GQ, Elle, Esquire, and others during her career. She is the daughter of Judith and Michael Pressler and was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Pressler earned a B.A. in English from Temple University and worked as a staff writer at Philadelphia magazine as well as freelancing for celebrity publications.
She later began writing for New York Magazine and was appointed editor of the magazine’s news site, Daily Intelligencer. As previously indicated, her piece ‘The Hustlers at Scores’ was adapted into a 2019 film. For the essay, Pressler was also nominated for a National Magazine Award. Her writings have also appeared in many editions of Columbia Journalism School’s Best Business Writing anthologies throughout the years.
Though the series does not go into great length regarding Vivian’s personal life. There are elements of the story that are based on the real journalist’s life. Pressler was temporarily caught in a dispute following an article she published about a high school kid in New York City. She made $72 million by trading stocks. The pupil had never earned the money, it was later revealed. Jessica, who was supposed to join the Bloomberg News investigative unit, appears to have stayed at New York Magazine as a result of this episode.
Where Is Jessica Pressler Now?
Jessica Pressler is still writing at New York Magazine, where she seems to be a contributing editor. The journalist also writes for GQ and Elle on a regular basis. She appears to live in Queens, New York, with her husband, Benjamin Wallace, whom she married in Philadelphia in April 2008.
Wallace mostly contributes to New York Magazine as a features writer, as well as Vanity Fair, where he seems to be a contributing editor. He has also published a non-fiction book titled ‘The Billionaire’s Vinegar: The Mystery of the World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine.’
