YG Responds to Drake’s Mention in “Family Matters” with New Track “Weird”

YG, the Compton-based rapper known for his distinctive West Coast sound, appears to have responded to Drake’s mention of him in the track “Family Matters.” While YG did not initially involve himself in the high-profile Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar feud, it seems that Drake’s casual reference to YG on his diss track struck a chord.

Drake’s line on “Family Matters” aimed to discredit Lamar by implying that YG, a well-known figure in the West Coast rap scene, was more authentically linked to gang culture than Lamar. This reference seemed minor and inconsequential at the time, but it apparently did not sit well with YG. On his latest single, “Weird,” YG addresses the issue head-on, making it clear that he didn’t appreciate being dragged into a conflict he had no part in.

In “Weird,” YG raps, “When it’s smoke, don’t ever mention my name (mention my name). You gon’ have me jeopardizin’ my fame, jeopardizin’ the gang, jeopardizin’ where you hang, n**ga.” Though he doesn’t explicitly name Drake, the context and timing of the track make it obvious who he’s referring to. YG is essentially warning against being used as a pawn in other artists’ disputes, especially when it involves close ties to fellow West Coast artists like Kendrick Lamar.

The history between YG and Drake is marked by collaboration and mutual respect. Drake featured on YG’s 2014 hit single “Who Do You Love?” from the album My Krazy Life, which reached number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100. They reunited for “Why You Always Hatin?” in 2016, which peaked at number 62. Additionally, YG was the opening act for the “Drake vs. Lil Wayne” tour in the same year, showcasing a professional camaraderie that had seemingly been unaffected by regional affiliations until now.

However, YG’s loyalty to Kendrick Lamar runs deep. Both artists hail from Compton and have been associated with similar themes in their music. YG has openly praised Lamar’s talent and the significance of their collaborations. In a past MTV interview, YG spoke highly of Lamar, saying, “It’s A-1 to be able to get somebody like that on my record. I knew Kendrick before I blew up, he knew me before he blew up and be rocking with what I was doin’ and I been rocking with what they was doin’ so it’s all love and respect.”

Moreover, DJ Mustard, YG’s longtime friend and collaborator, produced Lamar’s Drake diss track “Not Like Us,” further solidifying YG’s natural alignment with the West Coast side of the dispute.
