Skilyr Hicks was found dead in Liberty, South Carolina. She was found lifeless in the house of a friend on Monday night, the 6th of December 2021. The star was just 23 when the incident took place. This news was first reported by TMZ. The Pickens County Coroner’s Office confirmed the news to PEOPLE.
This heartbreaking news was first posted on social media by Skilyr’s sister, Breelyn on Wednesday.
Breelyn said in her post, “My super beautiful, extremely talented, hilarious, free spirit of a sister left this world to be with Jesus. I can’t possibly put into words how broken-hearted I am. I will miss her like crazy. I’ll miss her voice, her long warm hugs, her constantly making jokes using puns. Her ability to create music that inspired thousands of people”.
She further added, “Skilyr, I don’t know how I’ll be able to live without you. You were a light that showed brighter than ever”. She said, “You were my best friend; you were my rock. We always had each other’s back no matter what. Just know that I love you unconditionally, that you will live on in our hearts, minds, memories, and through your God-Given Musical Ability. Your Songs are your legacy. Fly High, Little Bird”.
Breelyn concluded by mentioning that Skilyr Hicks had so much life left to live. Skilyr’s mother, Jodi in her interview with TMZ, said that the singer “will live on through her music.”
Who was Skilyr Hicks?
If you watched AGT back in 2013, chances are, you saw this then 14-year-old on the stage performing. Roughly, 9 years later the sad news of her death came up. Skilyr Hicks used to write and compose her music. Hicks was 14 years old when she gave the auditions for AGT. She performed in front of Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Howard Stern, and Mel B, the then judges of the show.
Skilyr mentioned that she started performing her music after the death of her father. Her father died years before she made an entrance to the show. “After his funeral, I wrote my first song,” said Hicks. “That was a really difficult time for me. Music helped me let out all the emotion that was building up inside of me”, she added.
Eventually, after her time on AGT, Skilyr Hicks was arrested in 2017 and charged with domestic violence. She was later arrested for underage drinking in 2018.
Skilyr’s death came as a shock to all her fans, friends, and family. In a very less time, the singer had won many hearts in AGT season 8. She will be missed.
Cause of Skilyr Hicks Death
The cause of Skilyr’s death was not made available to the public. But her mother Jodi, mentioned reportedly that the 23-year-old was suffering from mental health issues. She was battling depression and substance abuse as well.
Jodi also added that Skilyr was so close to music, that she used it as a means to help people.
