The fate of the highly publicized defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard lies in the hands of a jury in Virginia.

Who will be liable for damages that might be in millions in their dueling controversial defamation case?

Here is everything you need to know.

Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard defamation trial to reach a verdict soon

The Fairfax defamation trial is overlooked by seven jurors. They will rule out whether Amber Heard defamed her former husband Johnny Depp when she wrote a Washington Post op-ed article in 2018 claiming herself, ‘a public figure representing domestic abuse.’

The jury will also decide whether the 36-year-old actress should be on the hook to pay for the damages in millions.

The defamation trial has been under public scrutiny ever since it began last month on 11th April in Fairfax County, Virginia

Heard and Depp have been throwing accusations at each other back and forth before a jury for about four weeks. The trial is presently on a weeklong hiatus and will resume on 16th May.

The closing arguments from the legal teams of both parties are slated to happen on the 27th of May. The jury would most likely deliberate the fate of the former pair soon after. It can take a few hours or maybe even a couple of days as well.

The Aquaman actress is not at risk of serving prison time since no criminal charges have been filed against her. Depp sued her for civil claims.

Moreover, there is a possibility that the jury remains unpersuaded by either side. They can also determine that neither Depp nor Heard should be awarded damages.

On the other hand, if the jury determines that Heard should be off the hook in Depp’s case then

Amber Heard dated Johnny Depp and soon the pair tied the knot on a private island. Regardless, their marriage lasted for 15 months before they separated.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard. In the suit, he claimed that Heard’s post harmed his career as well as reputation. Following Heard’s op-ed, the 58-year-old actor was removed from franchises such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Fantastic Beasts costing him tens of millions.

The actress then countersued him for a $100 million suit alleging that she was abused by Depp during their relationship.
