According to the rules, one needs to ensure, that the pets must be microchipped before the pets reach the age of 20 weeks. If the cats will not be microchipped before attaining the age of 20 weeks, then on the 21st day, a fine will be applicable of 500 for their cat’s age.

Over 10.8 million pet cats are present in the UK, as many as 2.8 million cats are unchipped. As a result, it would be difficult to reunite the owners with their lost or stolen cats. It has been found 8 out of 10 strays cats are not microchipped coming into Cats Protection’s Centres. Microchipping usually costs between 10 pounds and 30 pounds. Even an Animal Welfare Minister Lord Goldsmith stated as “Cats are the cutest and beloved part of our families, this microchipping is going to help us in getting our cats back.” He further added this rule will help in the protection of millions of pet cats. This rule will be introduced under Action Plan for Animal Welfare.

Jacqui Cuff, the charity’s head of Advocacy and Government Relations said, ” The importance of cat microchipping is seen every day, especially for the people who love them. It is for reuniting the cat with the owner and identifying an injured cat, or any tragic incident caused to the cat.”

For launching the new guidelines, the government has also worked at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. The rule of microchipping is going to be implemented and is mandatory for all owners to microchip their cats.
