“Who wants mango and rice that is sticky?”, Milli asked the roaring crowd as she munched on the dish.

Consequently, after the performance, mango sticky rice saw a spike in Google searches. Additionally, the dessert’s sales skyrocketed leaving it to be among the trending topics on the internet last weekend.

Mae Varee shop, Bangkok’s famous food shop which specializes in mango sticky rice was overwhelmed with its demand. Naparom Suntiparadorn, the owner of Mae Varee shop, said that the demand for the dish increased six to seven times following Milli’s performance.

Milli became the solo Thai artist to take to the Coachella stage. The rapper not only increased the demand for the sweet treat but also was the subject of criticism by repping the stereotypes in her home country with her lyrics.

“I don’t ride an elephant. I can play ping-pong with no hands,” said one of the lyrics.

She even took a jab at the Thai government system as she rapped the lyrics, “The country is good, people are good, our food is good but the government is bood [rotten]”.

Mango sticky rice to be listed among Thai’s cultural heritage item

In spite of Milli’s controversial lyrics and cristim, the Thai government decided to capitalize on the current viral frenzy online.

Thailand’s Department of Cultural Promotion has made an official proposal for mango sticky rice to be registered on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The local food industry of Thailand will get the maximum benefit from the viral sensation. Khao Niao Mamuang (Thai name for mango sticky rice) was only used to be a tourist offering before.
