Pop icon Taylor Swift has issued a legal threat against Jack Sweeney, a college student who has gained attention for tracking the movement of her private jet online. Sweeney, who runs a social media account dedicated to tracking high-profile private jets, became the target of Swift’s legal team due to concerns over her safety and privacy.

According to In Touch magazine, Swift’s lawyer, Katie Wright Morrone, sent Sweeney a cease-and-desist letter in December 2023. The letter, shared by Sweeney’s family with The Washington Post, made it clear that Swift’s legal team would be forced to take further legal action if the student did not stop his “stalking and harassing behavior.”

Swift’s legal team emphasized that their primary concern is the singer’s personal safety, stating that the tracking of her private jet was causing “direct and irreparable harm.” The letter detailed how the public disclosure of her flight routes had contributed to Swift’s emotional and physical distress, placing her in a “constant state of fear for her personal safety.” Furthermore, the legal team highlighted that there was “no legitimate public interest” in Sweeney’s actions, labeling the tracking as an attempt to “stalk, harass, and exert dominion and control.”

In response to the legal threat, Sweeney defended his actions through a statement shared with The Daily Mail. He insisted that he had no intention of causing harm, stating, “I actually think Swift has some good songs. I believe in transparency and public information.” Sweeney also pointed out that the cease-and-desist letter came shortly after media coverage criticizing Swift for the environmental impact of her private jet use. “People are interested in this information,” Sweeney argued, adding that Taylor Swift should expect her jet to be tracked, as the data he shares is publicly available.

Sweeney’s tracking of celebrity jets has garnered significant attention, and Taylor Swift is not the first high-profile individual to take issue with his activities. In 2022, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk accused Sweeney of compromising his safety by sharing what Musk referred to as his “assassination coordinates.” Musk ultimately banned Sweeney’s account from Twitter (now X), sparking a broader debate about privacy versus public transparency.

As this legal battle unfolds, it highlights the complex intersection between privacy, security, and public interest in an increasingly connected and transparent world. With Swift taking a firm stance on protecting her safety, it remains to be seen whether Sweeney will back down or continue his controversial jet-tracking efforts.
