Simu Liu and Bobba Tea: Cultural Appropriation Controversy Explained as Company Issues Apology

Simu Liu, the star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, recently found himself at the center of a cultural appropriation debate after an episode of Dragons’ Den aired on October 10, 2024. The episode sparked controversy when Simu Liu, an investor on the show, raised concerns about a Quebec-based bubble tea brand, Bobba, founded by Sebastien Fiset and Jess Frenette. Their presentation and product description stirred up issues regarding cultural appropriation, leading to an apology from the company.

The episode began with Fiset and Frenette pitching their ready-to-drink bubble tea product, which they described as a “trendy, sugary drink” made healthier with fruit juice. They were seeking $1 million in exchange for an 18% stake in their brand, stating that they had generated $4.6 million in revenue in their second year and expected to reach $7 million by the end of 2024.

However, Simu Liu quickly voiced his concerns, particularly regarding how the brand seemed to be positioning itself. Liu remarked that the presentation could lead to cultural appropriation issues, stating:
“There’s an issue of taking something that’s very distinctly Asian in its identity and quote-unquote ‘making it better.'”

Liu’s main concern revolved around the fact that boba tea, a popular Taiwanese drink, was being marketed and potentially rebranded in a way that diminished its cultural roots. He questioned Fiset and Frenette on the extent of Asian representation in their company. The duo responded that their partner is from Taiwan and that the recipes had been developed by them. However, this response did not satisfy Liu, who felt that the business lacked the necessary cultural sensitivity.

In a TikTok video posted on October 12, 2024, Simu Liu elaborated on his stance, clarifying that while he didn’t want to harm or disrespect the entrepreneurs, he was not willing to endorse a brand that profited from a product so deeply tied to his cultural heritage without proper acknowledgment. He emphasized the need for businesses to respect the cultural significance of their products.

Bobba, in response to the backlash, issued an apology on Instagram on October 14, 2024. The brand acknowledged the criticism and stated they needed time to reflect on the feedback. They expressed their regret, saying:
“While it was never our intention to cause harm or disrespect the community that created and popularized this beloved drink, we take full responsibility for the impact of our actions.”

The statement also mentioned that the founders recognized the valid points Simu Liu raised and viewed this situation as a learning opportunity. They further clarified that their goal was not to replace traditional bubble tea but to offer a healthier, ready-to-drink option for consumers. They admitted that their communication during the show may not have been clear, citing English as their second language, and pledged to take steps to avoid similar mistakes in the future.

Despite Simu Liu’s objections, fellow investor Manjit Minhas offered Fiset and Frenette the $1 million investment they were seeking. Minhas argued that innovation sometimes involves giving products new forms and adaptations, even if they come from a different cultural background.

The controversy highlights the ongoing conversation around cultural appropriation and the responsibilities businesses have when dealing with products deeply rooted in specific cultures. Bobba’s apology indicates a willingness to learn and grow from the situation, but it also underscores the importance of acknowledging and respecting cultural origins in today’s global market.
