Rust’ Incident: Alec Baldwin’s Prop Gun Was Used by Crew Members for Target Practice

The cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42 was shot accidentally and killed. The famous American actor Alec Baldwin is reported to have shot her during the shooting of a film. The episode occurred at around 1:50 p.m. on Thursday.
They were shooting in New Mexico on the sets of Rust when the incident happened. Alec Baldwin had to shoot a scene that required a gun. The pistol was one of many weapons that were being used on set. He was told by an assistant director that the gun had not been loaded. Not just Halyna “the prop firearm” also injured director, Joel Dsouza.
Use of gun for “Target Practice”
Several red flags were raised questioning the fact that how could a real bullet end up in the gun. A further investigation and some sources connected to production also revealed that the gun might have also been used by crew members offset. TMZ also reported- “The smoking gun that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins might’ve been more than just an on-set prop. It was also being fired recreationally, even when cameras weren’t rolling,”
Some crew members used the gun with real bullets for target practice. The bullets and blanks were stored together. This explains how one bullet might have ended up in Baldwin’s hands.
The use of the term “prop gun” has also come into question. Even though a prop gun should have been a fake gun. The term here was used for a gun that is being used as a prop, a real weapon. This also may have been one of the reasons that led to confusion. According to BBC Hollywood should ban the use of such terms overall.
The authorities still do not understand the need to use a real gun while filming. After the event, Mamie Mitchell, the script supervisor immediately called 911. When the operator asked her if it was a real loaded pistol being used on the sets she said-“I don’t, I cannot tell you that. We have two injuries from a movie gunshot,” The conversation raised several questions in front of officials.
Alec Baldwin is cooperating with the authorities right now. He is shocked by the incident and said,” No words to convey my shock and sadness”. It is due to the carelessness of many people that Halyna Hutchins lost her life and Dsouza was injured. For now, the shooting has been discontinued.
