Randy Moss Undergoes Surgery for Bile Duct Cancer, Shares Update
3 min readRandy Moss, the legendary NFL wide receiver and former ESPN analyst, recently revealed that he underwent surgery for bile duct cancer. In a heartfelt Instagram Live session, Moss shared his journey, addressing speculation about his health and expressing gratitude for the support he’s received.
Cancer Diagnosis and Successful Surgery
The 47-year-old NFL Hall of Famer disclosed that he had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer, a rare form of cancer that affects the tubes carrying bile from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine. Randy Moss underwent the Whipple procedure, a complex and lengthy surgery often used to remove cancer from the bile duct, pancreas, or nearby areas.
“I am a cancer survivor,” Moss announced during the live stream. “Some trying times, of course, but, you know, we made it through. And for that, I thank you all.”

He revealed that the surgery, which lasted six hours, was performed in Charlotte and was successful in removing the cancer. Moss’s disclosure suggests that the cancer was likely detected early, as surgical removal is typically an option for Stage 1 cases.
Moss added that his recovery journey isn’t over yet. “I will still have to undergo chemotherapy and some other treatments before I can fully recover,” he explained.

Timeline and Speculation
Moss’s announcement comes after weeks of speculation about his health. On December 6, ESPN announced that Moss would step away from his analyst role for an “extended time to focus on a personal health challenge.” Shortly afterward, rumors began swirling, fueled by comments from figures like Larry Fitzgerald Sr. and Brett Favre, who hinted at Moss’s battle with liver cancer.
Moss’s son, Thaddeus, pushed back against the speculation, calling it “disgusting” and criticizing those who publicized private matters without proper sources.
“You have no right to try to make private matters public for the sake of engagement,” Thaddeus said, addressing the rumors directly.
