Paloma Faith has blasted Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid and claimed that it teaches children a negative message. A few days after the film’s opening weekend, the singer shared a story on Instagram about taking her kids there. When she walked out of the theatre, the mother-of-two was less than impressed. As Faith pointed out in a since-deleted Instagram story, the movie’s message was not one she agreed with. Even though she praised Halle Bailey’s performance as the flame-haired mermaid, she said the storyline has a dark underside. Having just seen the new Little Mermaid with my kids, while I think Halle gives a great performance and the cast is great, I don’t want my daughters to think that it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers just to love a man, the ‘Can’t Rely On You’ singer Paloma Faith said.

What the hell is this? That’s not what I want to teach the next-generation women the singer added. A fierce backlash, however, followed her comments. Among the most misunderstood stories ever, The Little Mermaid never had a male protagonist, someone wrote on Twitter. Before she meets Eric, she sings the ‘I Want’ song because she wants to be part of that world; Eric symbolizes everything she is not allowed to be. According to another, it is a bit late to be angry about a 1989 film. One user also mentioned Faith tweeting in 2009 When I grow up, I’d like to be the Little Mermaid. Other admirers highlighted the fact that Ariel was giving up her voice to be a human being, not a man.

‘The Little Mermaid’ Criticized By Paloma Faith For Teaching Girls To Give Up Their Voice And Power For A Man

In Paloma Faith’s opinion, not everything that occurs under the sea is right. In her Instagram Stories, the singer criticized Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” – which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, a mermaid who falls in love with Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) – for its message. In a since-deleted post, Faith, 41, wrote, “I just saw [sic] the new Little Mermaid with my kids, and while Halle gives a good performance, and I think the cast is excellent, I don’t want my daughters to think it’s okay to give up their voices and their powers to love a man.” What the hell? The kind of thing I don’t want to be teaching next-generation women. Tweeters shared their thoughts about Faith’s remarks, with some asking if she had ever seen the 1989 original “Little Mermaid.” She hasn’t seen the original, has she?

The question is why would you take your child to a movie without knowing the description, especially if it was a previously animated film? It seems her problem is something else, one fan wrote. Basically, it’s the same as the original girl with another girl added. Another asked, Did she not know about the plot before buying a ticket? There’s nothing new about this movie. Ariel didn’t give up her voice for a man, but rather to be human, according to other fans. Before she even knows the prince exists, Arielle sings ‘part of your world’. Someone tweeted that the original movie already had a strong message of independence for women. To become human, she gave up her voice? Another wrote This is literally what the song ‘Part of your world’ is about.
