Lizzo pledges to donate $500k to Planned Parenthood following the Roe vs Wade overturn

Lizzo has revealed that she will donate $500,000 (£407,650) to Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights. 

The ‘About Damn Time’ hitmaker’s announcement came after the US Supreme court overturned the 1973 landmark Roe vs Wade case.

Lizzo pledged to donate a generous amount of $500 thousand from her upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights.

ThebGrrrls artist is gearing up to commence her tour in support of her fourth studio album Special which is set to drop this fall.

The singer revealed that the donation would be matched alongside live entertainment promoters Live Nation which will raise $1 million (£815,300).

The money will be raised to aid the aforementioned non-profit organizations. They will deliver reproductive healthcare in the US as well as globally.

Moreover, Melissa Viviane Jefferson aka Lizzo took to Instagram to share the news.

She wrote, ‘I’m pledging $500k from my upcoming tour to Planned Parenthood and Abortion Rights. Live Nation agreed to match- to make it 1 MILLION dollars.’

The musician continued, ‘The most important thing is action and loud voices. @plannedparenthood @abortionfunds and organizations like them- will need funding to continue offering services to people who are most harmed by this ban.’

The 34-year-old artist added, ‘Black women and women of color have historically had disproportionately less access to family planning resources- this is a great loss but not a new one.’

Furthermore, the Grammy-winning singer also urged the fans to donate to the cause.

Lizzo ended her post with, ‘Go to lizzolovesyou.com to donate, sign the Bans Off My Body petition, and sign up to volunteer.’

The Bans Off My Body petition was started by Planned Parenthood as ‘a rallying cry for autonomy and equality.’

The 1973 landmark Roe vs Wade case

The Supreme Court in the US overturned the Roe vs Wade decision nearly 50 years ago. It was the case that made abortion legal on a federal level.

In simple words, individual US states are now allowed to permit or ban abortion altogether.

According to Politico’s reports, presently 5 states in the USA have already made abortion illegal whereas 23 states are expected to ban, it soon.  

However, the court’s Friday ruling caused resulted in massive outrage from people all around the globe.

The Roe vs Wade legal battle revolved around ‘Jane Roe’ aka Norma McCorvey.
