Lily-Rose Depp defended her new show The Idol, saying that all of her nudity scenes in the show is “really intentional.” While the new programme by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has been heavily panned for catering to the male gaze – notably for the soaring amount of female nudity – Depp has shut down critics. During an interview with Vogue Australia, the 24-year-old actress who plays popstar Jocelyn discussed the show’s more racy sequences, saying she was always aware she was creating something ‘provocative’ that would divide viewers. She told the site, “The whole character, the show, and her arc was really a collaboration from beginning to end.” “We know we’re making something provocative, but we’re not scared,” she said.

The actor went on to say that she had never felt more respected and safe on a set’ than on the one spearheaded by Levinson and The Weekend, real name Abel Tesfaye. It is only through the trust we have built with each other, you and I, Sam and I, and Abel and I that can we build a set that feels truly safe. So when it comes to the nudity and risqué nature of the part, that was really purposeful for me, she explained. That was very significant to me and something I was looking forward to doing. I’m not afraid of it. I believe we live in a sexualized world. That sounds like an intriguing topic to investigate. However, it’s not simply the nudity that has sparked outrage; many fans have also criticised the show’s dialogue in more intimate scenes.
