Kirsten Dunst, known for her candidness, recently shed light on two significant decisions in her career, revealing why she turned down a role in “American Beauty” and why Marvel movies don’t appeal to her.

Kirsten Dunst Discusses Decision to Reject American Beauty Role

In a recent interview with Variety, Kirsten Dunst shared insights into why she declined the opportunity to star in Sam Mendes’ acclaimed 1999 film “American Beauty.” The role offered to her was that of Angela Hayes, the teenage object of desire for the protagonist, Lester Burnham, portrayed by Kevin Spacey. Despite the film’s subsequent success and critical acclaim, Dunst opted out, citing discomfort with the character’s sexualization rather than concerns about Spacey, who later faced allegations in the Me Too movement.

Reflecting on her decision, Kirsten Dunst mentioned, “I think I just turned down the meeting or something. But yeah, I just didn’t feel comfortable with the sexuality.” Instead, she chose to collaborate with Sofia Coppola on “The Virgin Suicides,” marking Coppola’s directorial debut.

Kirsten Dunst Opens Up About Choosing Not to Watch Marvel Movies

While Kirsten Dunst played the role of Mary Jane in Sam Raimi’s 2002 superhero blockbuster “Spider-Man,” she hasn’t revisited the Marvel universe since. In her interview, she succinctly explained her disinterest in Marvel movies: “It’s just not my thing.” Despite the success of the “Spider-Man” trilogy, Dunst hasn’t been drawn to the genre, preferring projects outside the superhero realm.

Interestingly, Dunst shared a behind-the-scenes anecdote about filming one of Hollywood’s most iconic kisses with co-star Tobey Maguire. While the upside-down kiss in “Spider-Man” remains memorable onscreen, Kirsten Dunst revealed that shooting the scene was less than glamorous. Enduring pouring rain and freezing temperatures, Maguire’s discomfort made the experience challenging. Dunst humorously recalled, “Tobey couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him.”
