During the heated 2024 presidential debate on September 10, Donald Trump made a bold claim about Vice President Kamala Harris, alleging she had met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to stop the war in Ukraine. Trump claimed Harris was sent by President Joe Biden to Europe to prevent the invasion, but according to him, her efforts failed, and Putin attacked Ukraine just three days later.

Harris, however, was quick to refute Trump’s accusation, calling his claim false. She responded by painting a vivid picture of what would have happened if Trump were in charge: “If Trump were president, Putin would be sitting in Kyiv right now. Putin would be sitting in Kyiv with his eyes on the rest of Europe, starting with Poland. How quickly you would give up for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with a dictator who would eat you for lunch.”

The vice president emphasized that she never met Putin, contradicting Trump’s allegations. Instead, she highlighted her support for Ukraine and mentioned her meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference in February 2022, just before the Russian invasion.

Official records and statements from multiple sources confirm that Harris has never met with Putin. For instance, in July 2024, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Russian president, was asked by Reuters if Putin had ever communicated with Kamala Harris. Peskov responded that he could not “remember a single contact between President Putin and Ms. Harris,” further disproving Trump’s assertion.

Harris’ trip to Europe in February 2022 included a visit to Germany for the Munich Security Conference, where she delivered a speech warning Russia of severe economic consequences if they invaded Ukraine. She never had any formal or informal meeting with the Russian president, as Trump had claimed.

In addition to dispelling Trump’s remarks about her supposed encounter with Putin, Harris also launched pointed attacks on the former president during the debate. She accused Trump of failing on several key issues, including illegal immigration, inflation, and rising crime rates, saying, “Donald Trump actually has no plan for you, because he is more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you.”

The vice president also addressed the controversial topic of abortion, claiming Trump was responsible for the rollback of abortion rights in the U.S. following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Harris emphasized the dangerous consequences of this decision, accusing Trump of enabling a scenario where children are forced to undergo pregnancies resulting from incest or suffer in parking lots due to unsafe abortions.

Harris’ sharp rhetoric and pointed criticisms of Trump during the debate seemed to get under his skin, with Trump frequently interrupting and delivering emotional responses. The debate reflected the intensity of the 2024 race, with both candidates making bold statements that will continue to be fact-checked and scrutinized as the election draws closer.

In conclusion, the fact-check reveals that Kamala Harris never met with Vladimir Putin, and Trump’s claims during the debate are unfounded. The vice president remains a staunch supporter of Ukraine, having met with President Zelensky but never with Putin, as confirmed by official sources.
