Cece Winans recently sparked controversy online when she admitted that she refused to star in Whitney Houston’s music video owing to her religious beliefs.

Here is everything you need to know.

Cece Winans criticism of Whitney Houston explained

Cece Winans admitted in a recent sermon that she turned down the chance to feature in the music video of Whitney Houston’s hit single I’m Every Woman.

Moreover, the American gospel singer preached about abstaining from performing activities that are considered to be ‘ungodly.’

In addition, Winans gave an example of the time she said no to appearing in her best friend Houston’s music video in order to emphasize her point.

She said, ‘When you think about how it was written, it’s a great song, but the lyrics don’t line up with the word of God.’

Additionally, Winans mentioned that Houston was aware that she would refuse the opportunity when she asked her.

She claimed, ‘It started off with “I can cast a spell” I’m not singing that!’

Furthermore, Winans mentioned that music listeners get so ‘caught up in the beat’ that they do not even realise what they are hearing. She went ahead to even call it ‘demonic.’

Netizens stand divided over Cece Winans comments

Many users took to social media to give their take on Cece Winans’s comments about Whitney Houston after the video of her sermon went viral online.

Besides that, there was one group who was speaking against her conservative belief while the others supported her remarks.

Subsequently, the ones defending Houston claimed that Winans should not take the lyrics of the song literally. They added that the gospel singer was ‘deceiving listeners’ by sharing her conservative narrative.

A user wrote, ‘My lord, it’s a metaphor… Whitney was a devout Christain… overly sanctified ppl irk me so bad lord.’

Another user chimed in to say, ‘Love her… but y’all can interpret a text that was written second and third hand and burned and re-interpreted but you couldn’t see “I can cast a spell” written as a metaphor? Like really? So we interpret one and take the other literally? Really.’

Meanwhile, the other half who are in favor of the 58-year-old said that she has a right to express her belief.

Someone else noted, ‘Y’all have to let people have their beliefs. Cece Winans wasn’t attacking anyone, she was talking about how the song didn’t align with her belief and that’s fine.’
