A minimum of 22 people were killed and many more were injured in a mass shooting in Maine on Wednesday evening, the bloodiest event on US soil in four years. According to state police, an active shooter targeted a restaurant and bowling alley in Lewiston, the state’s second-largest city. According to multiple accounts citing police sources, at least 22 people were killed and up to 60 were injured, the biggest death toll since the same number of people were shot in an El Paso Walmart in August 2019. A manhunt involving hundreds of police officers is currently underway to find the shooter, who remains at large.

Police have released a photograph of a dark-haired, bearded suspect carrying what seems to be a semiautomatic weapon, asking the public for assistance in identifying an “armed & dangerous” 40-year-old man named Robert Card. According to a police intelligence assessment acquired by the Associated Press, Mr Card is a trained firearms instructor at a US Army Reserve facility in Maine who was hospitalised for two weeks earlier this year. Mr Card recounted having heard voices and threatening to shoot at the military training site in Saco, Maine, according to the paper. The shooter, according to accounts, opened fire at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley, as well as Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant.
