In his major return to the Ed Sullivan Theatre, home of The Late Show, David Letterman received a long round of applause. The former late-night programme host returned to his old haunts and was met with a standing ovation from the audience, which included his replacement, Stephen Colbert. “Ladies and gentlemen, my guest tonight definitely needs no introduction,” Colbert remarked, introducing Letterman. “I am delighted to welcome Mr. David Letterman back to the Ed Sullivan Theatre.” The audience applauded and praised as Letterman stepped onto the set, soaking up all the love from those in attendance. “Wow! What do you think?” Letterman remarked as the audience roared for him.
When the audience began shouting Letterman’s first name, the comedian inquired of Colbert, “What happened? “What are they up to now?” “Is there gonna to be trouble?” Letterman said as the audience became louder. Following his prolonged greeting, Letterman glanced at his watch. As Letterman sat down, he told Colbert to “control your people.” It was Letterman’s first appearance on the CBS late-night show since retiring after 23 years in May 2015. Letterman has a show on Netflix called My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, where he interviews people, since he stopped hosting The Late Show.

After leaving The Late Show, Letterman has sometimes been on late-night TV. He appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night With Seth Meyers, and the last episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden this year.
Monday’s appearance is his first return to the show he introduced on CBS in 1993. In addition, the National performed as a musical guest on Monday’s Late Show, after being chosen by Letterman. “There is only one response when David Letterman approaches to inquire if you’ll accompany him as the musical guest on his first return to The Late Show… “See you on Monday,” the band said on Twitter. Earlier this year, during a music discussion, Letterman lauded the National, stating, “Oh, I love the National,” and referring to them as “your saddest friend’s favourite band.” “I say that since I enjoy the National, and I hope I could have been Matt Berninger since nobody’s cooler than Matt Berninger,” Letterman said in an interview with NME. ” They deserve to be in the Hall Of Fame.” Letterman made his Late Show debut after he and his bandleader Paul Shaffer announced a raffle for the marquee benefiting Habitat for Humanity.
