Greta Thunberg (20), a Swedish environmental activist, was detained twice by police on Wednesday, March 1, along with other demonstration participants in Oslo, Norway’s capital city. A group of activists, including Thunberg, have been protesting the removal of 151 wind turbines from reindeer pastures that “Sami” Indigenous herders use in Central Norway. Several government buildings were blocked by the protesting group on Wednesday, including Thunberg. Before being taken away by Norwegian police officers, the former, carrying a Sami flag of red, blue, yellow and green, spoke to Reuters, saying: The Norwegian state is the one who is committing the real crime here, as it violates human rights.

Various netizens commented on the matter after pictures from the protest site of Greta Thunberg being lifted and taken away by Norwegian authorities went viral. According to various Twitter users, the protest was just “another staged” arrest and photoshoot for the 20-year-old. Twitter users criticized Thunberg for staging yet another arrest within minutes of her arrest. The arrest was lauded as a “great acting performance” by the young environmentalist, who was sarcastically urged to receive an Oscar during the police detention, while another questioned whether there should have been cameras on site.

Demonstrations by blocking government buildings in the country’s capital began last week on February 23 and are still going on, putting the minority centre-left government in a bind. Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland cancelled his official visit to Britain as a result of protests against the government. This is not the first time Greta Thunberg has been detained during a protest and has been clicked while detained. She was last seen getting arrested in Germany after she and several other activists protested the demolition of a village for coal mine expansion.
