Greta Thunberg (20), a Swedish environmental activist, was detained twice by police on Wednesday, March 1, along with other demonstration participants in Oslo, Norway’s capital city. A group of activists, including Thunberg, have been protesting the removal of 151 wind turbines from reindeer pastures that “Sami” Indigenous herders use in Central Norway. Several government buildings were blocked by the protesting group on Wednesday, including Thunberg. Before being taken away by Norwegian police officers, the former, carrying a Sami flag of red, blue, yellow and green, spoke to Reuters, saying: The Norwegian state is the one who is committing the real crime here, as it violates human rights.

Various netizens commented on the matter after pictures from the protest site of Greta Thunberg being lifted and taken away by Norwegian authorities went viral. According to various Twitter users, the protest was just “another staged” arrest and photoshoot for the 20-year-old. Twitter users criticized Thunberg for staging yet another arrest within minutes of her arrest. The arrest was lauded as a “great acting performance” by the young environmentalist, who was sarcastically urged to receive an Oscar during the police detention, while another questioned whether there should have been cameras on site.

In Oslo, Greta Thunberg was briefly detained by the Norwegian Police for protesting. Native American activists and campaigners in Norway organized the protest to demand the removal of wind turbines from reindeer pastures. They blocked several government buildings, and Greta Thunberg and others blocked a door to the Norwegian finance ministry when police officers lifted them up and carried them away. While protesters were being removed, they chanted slogans. As a result of international conventions, the Norwegian Court of Appeal ruled in 2021 that two wind farms in central Norway violated Sami rights. After more than 16 months, the turbines are still in operation. A picture showing Greta Thunberg being taken away by Norwegian authorities from the protest site has gone viral and has instantly drawn the attention of various netizens. Twitter users characterized the protest as one “more staged” arrest and photoshoot for the 20-year-old. It didn’t take long for Twitter users to lambast Thunberg for staging another arrest. Several commentators praised the young activist’s arrest as a “great acting performance” and also sarcastically called for an Oscar for her, while others questioned the presence of cameras at the arrest site.

Another wrote they are awaiting the “behind the scenes” footage of the incident which would provide an overview of the whole production and direction. There are plenty of others who have called the Sweden environmental activist’s video and pictures “staged.” It was a great acting performance. Is she up for an Oscar this year or does Zelenskyy already have that covered, asked one user. As another added, cameras were just nearby when she was ‘briefly’ restrained. According to a third user, what was the turnaround time for getting the camera crew ready this time? In case you are unaware, Thunberg and the group oppose two wind farms with 151 turbines near Trøndelag’s Fosen. Demonstrations by blocking government buildings in the country’s capital began last week on February 23 and are still going on, putting the minority centre-left government in a bind. Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland cancelled his official visit to Britain as a result of protests against the government. This is not the first time Greta Thunberg has been detained during a protest and has been clicked while detained. She was last seen getting arrested in Germany after she and several other activists protested the demolition of a village for coal mine expansion.
