As a result of his consistent “blasphemous posts on social media” as well as disobedience towards the bishop, the Vatican council has defrocked Father Frank Pavone, an anti-abortion activist priest. The Vatican ambassador to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, informed U.S. bishops on Sunday, 18th December that Pavone was decided against on 9th November 2022 and there was no chance of appeal. A prominent anti-abortion organization, Priests for Life, has Pavone as its national director. Furthermore, he has written several books centred around cancelling abortion, which has been a consonant partisan position for Donald Trump.

It was determined that Father Frank Pavone had no reasonable justification for his actions even though he had “ample opportunity” to defend himself, according to the statement. One notable example of his influence is when Norma McCorvey, the “Jane Roe” of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade abortion case, called him the catalyst that led her to convert to Catholicism. A photo of Trump appears in the background of the outspoken now-ex-priest’s Twitter account. In the United States, Trump has become a champion for anti-abortion advocates through his Supreme Court appointments, which helped overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision guaranteeing abortion rights.

Pavone was called Mr. Pavone and described as a layperson in the statement. In 2016, Pavone made headlines after placing an aborted fetus on the altar and posting a video explaining how the Democrats support abortion, while Republicans protect the unborn. Moreover, the Amarillo diocese disassociated Pavone from the Catholic church and its teachings because his social media accounts were flagged as political in nature. Despite Trump’s loss to Joe Biden in 2020, Frank Pavone has been an ardent supporter of the former. An image of him wearing a MAGA hat still appears on his Twitter profile. Upon learning of his defrocking, Father Frank Pavone posted a tweet in which he wrote that the Vatican’s papers would not hinder his vocation as a pro-life leader and priest.
