2 min readThe ARMYs caused an uproar on social media sites after BTS announced that they were going on a ‘hiatus’ to focus more on their solo career. The said video surfaced online on Tuesday and is rapidly taking over the internet.
The shocking announcement came just a few days after they released their three-album anthropology record called Proof.
Here is everything you need to know.
BTS talks about their future during their Festa Dinner
During the one-hour pre-recorded video, all the seven members of the group were sitting down for their Festa Dinner, an annual fan celebration event.
The band members RM, J-Hope, Jin, Suga, Jimin, V, and Jungkook recalled about the time nine years they spent together.
The group questioned their identity following the release of their English songs Butter and Permission to D ance.
RM said in a serious tone, ‘We have to accept that we’ve changed.’
He added, ‘For me, it w as like the group BTS was within my grasp until On and Dynamite, but after Butter and Permission to Dance, I didn’t know what kind of group we were anymore.’
However further into the video, we can see them discussing the future of their group. This is where things get a little tricky.
Suga asks a question in Korean which has been subtitled in English as ‘We’re going into a hiatus now. Should we talk about why we’re not doing the Festa or making content?’
RM also announced their ‘temporary hiatus’ in the clip which somehow triggered the frenzy of the fans.
The term ‘temporary hiatus’ has been used by other music bands in the past which caused the fans to believe that BTS were gently breaking the news of their split to the fans.
Regardless, BTS‘s management company came forward to clear out the confusion.
Hybe addresses the confusion of BTS going on a hiatus
Hybe, the music company that represents BTS released a statement to clear out fans’ confusion regarding the band’s ‘hiatus’.
The statement explains, ‘To be clear, they are not on hiatus but will take time to explore some solo projects at this time and remain active in various different formats.’
The entertainment company continues to insist that the video has been mistranslated. They said that the term ‘hiatus’ has been unintentionally used in YouTube’s subtitles.
However, the damage was done and the company lost a total stock of $1.7 billion in market value on early Wednesday morning following the day the announcement was published.
