Boldy James survived a frightening vehicle accident in January, which left him in “critical condition, suffering from broken vertebrae in his neck and orthopaedic injuries,” according to a statement released at the time. The young rapper released his Indiana Jones album shortly after the tragedy, but he still had a long road to recuperation ahead of him. James made a giant step towards full functionality on Saturday, June 12, when he kicked off his six-date Back Outside Tour at The Shelter in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
Really grateful I got to watch @BoldyJames get back on stage after enduring so much. It's been a small dream of mine to write about him and his enormous gifts as a storyteller for a while. Gratitude to @metrotimes for the chance to cover his comeback show:https://t.co/7FmUD8e22l

According to Eli Day of the Detroit Metro Times’ show review, James was in excellent spirits, exclaiming at various times during his act, “Feels good to be back, man, I swear to God, I’m almost there, darling. Throughout the show, Boldy acknowledges those who never left his side and kept the dream of his full recovery alive when, according to Day, doing so himself would have been like flying too close to the sun. On May 6, James announced the Back Outside Tour. His next date is The Roxy in Los Angeles on June 22. The final four gigs are on June 29 at Racket NYC in New York, NY, July 18 at Antone’s Nightclub in Austin, TX, July 19 at Warehouse Live in Houston, TX, and July 21 at Ridglea Room in Fort Worth, TX.

Boldy has established himself as one of hip-hop’s best world-builders in recent years, admired not just for his ability to tell vivid stories while rapping his ass, but also for how those stories immerse listeners in a universe that feels genuine and three-dimensional. Boldy is a genuine neighbourhood griot, walking every inch of the concrete with you, turning down side streets and alleyways, and telling what it’s like to live on the edge of multiple simultaneous cliffs.
