A rare event at Jeopardy! Where contestant Mattea Roach Stood Alone For The Final Round

In the latest episode of the American competition, Jeopardy, we witness Mattea Roach maintaining her winning streak as the show’s reigning champion. Nicky Smith on the other hand ends up having a negative balance.

Mattea Roach (a Toronto-based tutor) joined the game series with her 15-game winning streak. She was welcomed alongside Reya Sehgal (a cultural strategist from New York) as well as Nicky Smith (a debate instructor from San Francisco).

During the show, continuing her streak, Roach won a whopping total amount of $352,781.

Jeopardy follows its original game format where three contestants compete for three rounds and six categories. The show includes the champion of the previous season. 

The prize money on the show goes up at every level. During the final round, contestants can use the money they have earned to place a bet.

Mattea Roach wins the latest Jeopardy game while Nicky Smith ends up with a negative cash balance

Canadian native, Mattea Roach proved her immense knowledge in the recent episode of Jeopardy which aired on 26th April.

Roach correctly answered 14 out of 15 questions including the Jeopardy and the Daily Double rounds. She was in the lead with $8000 while Reya Sehgal was at $3,800. Nicky Smith however finished with -$400.

Roach dominated the Double Jeopardy round and was successful in answering 19 questions correctly. She was followed up by Smith who correctly answered three questions.

Mattea had a total of $23,200 whereas Sehgal had $5,000 as they headed towards the Final Jeopardy round. Smith regardless was not qualified for the final round as he could not place the wager with -$800.

Roach was the last contestant standing in the final round as the other two contestants were left with negative cash balances.

Jeopardy host, Ken Jennings mused to the viewers, “And then there was one.” Jennings presents the game show alongside Mayim Biali.

He introduced the last round as “It’s a rare solo Final Jeopardy.”

According to Just Jared, a single-player game of Final Jeopardy has only happened three times before in the history of the game show. It previously took place in 2012, 2015, and 2020 when Kevin Walsh stood alone for the final round. 

For the unversed, Roach started the competition with $21,400 and made a bet of only $5,000. Fortunately, she correctly answered most of the questions which left her with prize money of $26,400.
