‘Dancing With The Stars’ Moving To Disney+ After 16 Years On ABC
3 min readOn Disney+, “Dancing with the Stars” gets a new home. Beginning with the upcoming season, the ABC staple will leave the network for the streaming service after 16 seasons.
The popular ballroom dancing competition series has been picked up for a two-year run on Disney+. It’s the first live show to air on the platform.
“We are thrilled to bring this beloved show exclusively to Disney+ as the platform’s first-ever live series,” Kareem Daniel, chairman, of Disney media and entertainment distribution, said in a statement. “‘Dancing with the Stars’ has entertained fans for 16 years on ABC. We are excited to bring this beloved show exclusively to Disney+ as the platform’s first-ever live series.”
Dancing with the Stars will leave ABC this fall after more than 30 seasons on the network, including two spin-offs, in order for the network to “showcase several Monday Night Football games as well as develop and invest in new and future programming,” according to the network, which has also had success with fall installments of The Bachelorette in the past two seasons.
In 2023, ABC will exclusively broadcast a third Monday Night Football game
Beginning in 2022, as part of ESPN’s MNF contract, ABC will exclusively broadc ast one additional Monday Night Football game, with the number of games increasing to three in 2023.
Live entertainment had been the last stronghold of network television before Prime Video, Peacock, and Apple TV+ became players in live sports. That began to change this year when the ACM Awards, a long-running television mainstay, were streamed on Prime Video, a milestone that has now been followed by DWTS’ migration to Disney+.
While other broadcast shows have made the transition to streaming services, such as SEAL Team and Evil to Paramount+, Lucifer and Manifest to Netflix (after cancellation), and AP Bio to Peacock, this is the highest-profile, most established, and popular series — and the first major non-scripted one — to do so.
Disney executives are hoping that DWTS’ large fan base will translate into new viewers — and, eventually, subscribers — for the platform.
‘Dancing with the Stars’ has been a popular ABC show for years
In a statement, Dana Walden, chief of entertainment for Walt Disney Television, stated, “‘Dancing with the Stars’ has been a beloved institution on ABC for 30 seasons and offered so much joy to millions of people.” “With ABC’s unscripted slate expanding dramatically, this is a fantastic opportunity to bring this show to a whole new generation of viewers on Disney+.
” We’re grateful to our wonderful friends at BBC Studios. We’re looking forward to working with them on this fantastic series, which will be overseen by Rob Mills and the great Walt Disney Television Alternative team. “
NFL football is slated to replace “Dancing with the Stars” during primetime on ABC this autumn, prompting the shift to Disney+. Many games that are now airing on ESPN+ will be simulcast on the network.
The first season of “Dancing with the Stars” aired on ABC in 2005. For the past 15 years, it has remained in the Monday night primetime slot.
