Awkwafina, an actress and rapper, has recently addressed the criticism that she is facing. She is using African American Vernacular English i.e., AAVE. She also uses “Blaccent” in films, music, and TV Shows which has raised a lot of criticism. Awkwafina has also confirmed that she will not be active on social media from now onwards.

What is the Meaning of Blaccent?

If you are not aware of the word Blaccent then it means “a non-black individual adopting a black voice. It is connected to allegations of cultural misappropriation”. Awkwafina has played the roles of Goh Peik Lin and Constance in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8 respectively. After that she faced criticism.

What is the Case?

The real name of Awkwafina is Nora Lum. On 5th February, Saturday, she has shared a statement on social media. She wrote, “as a non-black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backward towards the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group.”

“But I must emphasize: To Mock, belittle, or be unkind in any way possible at the expense of others is: Simply. Not. My nature. It never has, and it never was ” she added.

Why did The Actress Remove her Twitter?

The actress tried to explain her view of why she felt her voice often carried that accent. She wrote, “my immigrant background allowed me to carve an American identity of the movies and TV shows I watched, the children I went to public school with, and my undying love and respect for hip hop.”

Awkwafina continued further, “I think, as a group, Asian Americans are still trying to figure out what that journey means for them.”

She wrote a message for her followers, “Well, I will see you in a few years, Twitter- per my therapist. To my fans, thank you for continuing to love and support someone who wishes they could be a better person for you. I apologize if I ever fell short, and anything I did. You are in my heart always.”

Later the actress added a clarification comment, “I am retiring from the ingrown toenail that is Twitter. Not retiring from anything else, even if I wanted to, I did not drunkenly hit someone with the shoehorn and now escaping as a fugitive. Also, I’m available on all other socials that don’t tell you to kill yourself!”

“She Did Not Owe Anyone an Explanation for Anything”

Many people on social media have stated Awkwafina’s statement as a non-apology. As per sources, the actress has liked many of the succession comments that have been posted as replies suggesting that she has done nothing wrong, including one comment that says “the actor did not owe anyone an explanation for anything.”

In her statement, the actress has talked about the African American community in America as “it is a group that is disproportionately affected by institutionalized policies and law enforcement policies- all while having historically and routinely seen their culture stolen, exploited, and appropriated by the dominant culture for monetary gain without any acknowledgment nor respect for where those roots come from, The Pioneers of its beginnings, and the artists that perfected and mastered the craft.”
