In recent days, a group of internet users called Antila has received severe backlash for attempting to capitalize on YouTube star Etika’s image. The new NFT project titled EtikaPunks has outraged the internet.

On January 4, 2022, social media users announced the NFT project EtikaPunks. Despite, the fact that the creators claim that it is an effort “to honor Etika’s life,” the project has received negative responses.

Who was Etika?

Nintendo YouTuber, Desmond “Etika” Amofah, was very popular and known for his outrageous reactions to game announcements and Smash Bros. revelations.

Nintendo Direct fans, known as the JoyCon Boys, looked forward to his eager bursts of excitement as they watched the show.

Unfortunately, Etika committed suicide in June of 2019 after a long fight with mental illness. Three years later, the JoyCon Boys still hold in high regard Etika’s career and favorite reactions.

One more time, the internet has managed to damage a late creator’s legacy. Etika has been turned into a non-fungible token in much the same way as Stan Lee’s life work was turned into a “commemorative” NFT.

Attacks on EtikaPunk NFT

Desmond “Etika” Amofah, known for his YouTube videos and involvement in the Smash Bros console game franchise.

As announced on January 4, 2022, the Ethics Punk project is being undertaken by the NFT. It seems that many of the responses to the project were negative. Despite the creators’ claim that the project is meant to “commemorate Etika’s life”.

EtikaPunk is called “shameful”, “gross”, and “disgusting” by users.

It shows a crude drawing of Amofah standing in front of a bridge on EtikaPunk’s NFT. Observers speculate that the bridge may represent the Manhattan Bridge.

The bridge from where Etika is believed to have jumped off in order to kill himself.

According to an NFT, Etika is a person who holds a banana in his hand and looks like an ape. This particular NFT has been dubbed as “racist” and “disrespectful” by many fans.

A user said, “What the actual fuck is wrong with you?” Another said that it is gross to have the NFT dubbed like this. People on Twitter are asking to “Block and Report @EtikaPunks”.

EitkaPunks’ pages on Rarible express that they are not “officially affiliated with Etika or his family.”

At the time of reporting, none of the three NFTs in the auction are being bid on.

Check out this Smash Bros mod that makes Etika a playable character as an example of how to properly commemorate a creator.
