Michelle Li, a Korean American television reporter in St. Louis, sparked outrage throughout the country this weekend after revealing a message from a listener complaining that Li was “Very Asian” throughout her New Year’s Day coverage.
“This evening, your Asian anchor spoke about seeming to be Asian. Because Asian folks eat dumplings on New Year’s Day,” the lady begins. “Imagine if any of these White presenters said, ‘Yeah, on New Year’s Day, white people enjoy eating this?’
“I don’t think it would be right for her to say that, and she’s being extremely Asian and…I don’t understand,” she continued. Is it okay if she keeps her Korean to herself? Sorry for bothering you”. Moreover, Li recorded herself reacting to the statement, where you can listen in its entirety in the video Michelle Li Instagram. Li didn’t say anything, instead of sipping her drink and listening intently.
This viewer also claimed that when a white individual would have said anything comparable. They would have no job further.
On Twitter, KSDK’s reporter stated that she would “want to say something in return”. She retaliated a little more forcefully on Instagram, writing in the post. “We must all be provided with the opportunity to present our full humanity to the board.”
Michelle Li’s Twitter and Instagram descriptions have since been “VERY ASIAN.”
Who is Michelle Li?
Michelle Li is a multi-talented reporter as well as an anchor for St. Louis’ 5. . She joined the station after working as a morning host and consumer journalist at 5 On Your Side’s sister station, KING 5 in Seattle.
Michelle, who grew up in Kansas City, is no newcomer to St. Louis. She’s married to a native St. Louisan. Michelle has twenty years of broadcasting career and a master’s in communications from the University of Kansas. She performed as the principal nighttime presenter at outlets in Madison, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Missouri before coming to Seattle.
Michelle certainly has won numerous honors for her work. Notably five local Emmys and 4 major Murrows, including one about narrative writing. For journalism, social networks, and creativity, she has received provincial Murrow awards. Moreover, In 2020, she won a coveted Peabody award for her efforts in a pioneering series about ethnicity and multiculturalism. “I’m ecstatic and honored to be returning to Missouri and working for a dream program,” Michelle remarked.
