The US Food and Drug Administration recalled 1,634 pounds of beef jerky products from eight states on Friday, March 4. FSIS found Listeria monocytogene in the products during routine checks, according to a report released by the US Department of Agriculture. Many of the snacks were likely contaminated and could not be sold after tests were conducted on them.

Meat Snacks Contaminated

There have been multiple beef jerky recalls in several states this weekend due to listeria contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has recalled approximately 70 types of jerky made by Boyd Specialties in California and distributed across the United States. Boyd Specialities LLC, a California-based manufacturer of meat snacks, has a total of 83 sub-brands with this contamination. The FDA reported that the affected products were shipped to multiple states for retail.

So far, there has been no report of complications resulting from their consumption. According to FDA and FSIS officials, customers should return the products to the place of purchase or throw them away.

Products Detected With Listeria Monocytogene Bacteria

A routine inspection by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) detected Listeria monocytogene bacteria in the products. Listeriosis is a serious infection primarily affecting older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. Those who consume food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may experience fever, nausea, muscle aches, and diarrhea.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it takes around 30 days for symptoms to appear. The infection may cause headaches, balance problems, and uncontrollable shaking of the body when it reaches the nervous system.

Infections can cause the most damage to pregnant women, the elderly, or people with compromised immune systems. It affects pregnant women, but they show mild symptoms. However, it can adversely affect the fetus, even if the pregnant woman shows only mild symptoms. It may lead to miscarriage or even premature birth.
