She was loved by her family, her friends, said Smith-Fields’ brother, Lakeem Jetter.
He said she was a beautiful person inside and out, and her family wouldn’t let her name die, and they wouldn’t stop fighting for justice once they won it. “we’re going to keep her name alive.”

According to the Daily Mail, Smith-Field’s cause of death is unknown. According to the Medical Examiner, her cause of death was acute intoxication caused by fentanyl, promethazine, hydroxyzine, and alcohol. Death was determined to be accidental.
Matthew LaFountain, a white man Smith-Fields met on dating app Bumble, was drinking tequila at her apartment when Smith-Fields fell ill and vomited, according to a Bridgeport Police Department report.

Lauren Smith-Fields’ family is suing the City of Bridgeport for what?
The family of Smith Fields allegedly is dissatisfied with how police are treating the investigation of her case, claiming that the detective asked them to stop calling him and did not seem to care about investigating LaFountain.
NBC Connecticut reports that Jetter spoke with the officer about the man. He told him he was a very nice guy and they were no longer investigating him. It sounded strange to hear that from a detective, almost as if he was standing up for him.
Jetter also claimed that police did not conduct a thorough investigation of the crime scene, claiming that their seizure of her phone, passport, and $1,345 in cash failed to yield other evidence that could have potentially indicated what happened.
