Alicia Silverstone, beloved for her role as Cher in the iconic ’90s film Clueless, recently sparked concern among her fans after posting a TikTok video where she ate an unfamiliar berry, potentially exposing herself to serious harm. The August 19 video showed Silverstone casually plucking a bright vermilion-colored berry from a bush along a street in England and sampling it, unaware that it might be toxic.

The actress, who appeared intrigued yet puzzled by the small, vibrant fruit, began the video with a mix of curiosity and caution. “I’ve discovered something that I can’t figure out what it is and I need your help,” Silverstone said as she held the berry up to the camera, revealing its seed-filled interior. She then explained that she found the fruit while walking on the street and decided to taste it, wondering if it might be a tomato.

“I just bit into it because it was on the street, and we were discussing whether this was a tomato or not,” Alicia Silverstone said, before accidentally dropping the berry on the ground. After examining it further, she admitted, “It’s definitely not [a tomato].” She showed viewers the plant from which the berry came, growing amidst dense foliage behind a fence.

Although Alicia Silverstone expressed some reservations about the fruit, remarking, “If I bite it — I don’t think you’re supposed to eat this,” she couldn’t help but compare its flavor to a pepper. She then turned to her followers for help, asking, “Does anyone know what this is?”

It didn’t take long for worried commenters to flood the video with warnings. Many viewers quickly identified the mysterious fruit as a Jerusalem cherry, a plant that, while beautiful, is notorious for being toxic if ingested. According to the Northern New England Poison Center, Jerusalem cherries are indeed harmful, and even consuming a small amount of the berries or leaves can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. More severe cases can cause drowsiness, hallucinations, or heart rate irregularities.

Plantura, a gardening resource, further emphasized the dangers of the Jerusalem cherry, noting that the plant contains a “poisonous alkaloid” that can cause significant discomfort. Though the effects are typically not life-threatening, they can be “extremely unpleasant.”

Silverstone’s TikTok video quickly went viral, with fans frantically commenting to ensure the actress was okay. “Is Alicia ok??? We need an update!” wrote one concerned follower. Another added, “WOMAN! UPDATE US. ARE YOU ALIVE AND WELL!?!” Some viewers anxiously noted the time difference between the U.S. and England, pleading for an update: “Okay it is 7am in England, can you give us an update PLEASE. just a quick ‘hey I’m okay!’”

The incident sparked an online conversation about foraging safety and the importance of properly identifying wild plants before consuming them. While some people enjoy discovering edible plants in nature, experts strongly advise against eating anything without positive identification, as many seemingly innocent fruits and berries can be toxic.

As of yet, Alicia Silverstone has not provided a follow-up to confirm her well-being, leaving fans eager for reassurance that she’s safe after her spontaneous roadside snack. Hopefully, the Clueless star will soon offer her followers a lighthearted update confirming that she is, indeed, okay after her berry-eating adventure.
