On the evening of December 30, 2024, a building collapsed near the intersection of Magazine and Felicity Streets in New Orleans, raising concerns about structural safety in the area. The collapse, which occurred around 5:45 PM, caused significant disruptions, including the crushing of two vehicles and a power outage affecting 300 residents. Emergency crews are actively monitoring the site, but as of now, there is no official confirmation of injuries or the extent of the damage.
Transformer Damage and Response
The collapse also impacted a nearby Entergy transformer, resulting in a flash visible to those in the vicinity. However, Entergy New Orleans has clarified that the transformer was a victim of the collapse, not its cause. A company representative stated:
“A structure collapse at the corner of Magazine and Felicity caused damage to Entergy equipment, including a transformer—which created the flash seen by those nearby. To be clear: the transformer was impacted by the building collapse; it was not the cause.”

Gris-Gris, a restaurant located across the street, announced on social media that it has temporarily closed due to partial power loss. The eatery expressed concern for the community and pledged to reopen as soon as conditions permit.
This incident marks the third building collapse in New Orleans in the past four months, sparking questions about structural integrity in the city. Earlier in December, a partial building collapse in the Central Business District caused traffic and commercial disruptions. In October, a fire in Hastings Place, located near Gris-Gris, led to extensive damage to another structure.
