Valkyrae Responds to Criticism Over Her Thoughts on Motherhood

YouTube star Valkyrae responds to a critical viewer after expressing her ambivalence about having children during a May 2024 live stream.
YouTube star Rachell ‘Valkyrae’ Hofstetter, known for her extensive streaming career and massive following, recently addressed her thoughts on having children during a live stream in May 2024. Valkyrae, who specializes in games like GTA V and Valorant and boasts over 4 million YouTube subscribers, has been a prominent figure in the streaming community for nearly a decade.
During her May 13 broadcast, Valkyrae opened up about her ambivalence toward starting a family. She expressed conflicting feelings about the idea, saying, “I’m very back and forth about it. A part of me feels like, ‘I’m too busy,’ and then a part of me feels like, ‘I don’t want to.’ And then, a part of me feels like, ‘I could be a dope mom… if I really tried.’ You know?”
While discussing her thoughts, a viewer commented, “Marriage first,” implying that Valkyrae should consider getting married before having children. Valkyrae disagreed with this sentiment, firmly stating her belief that marriage is not a prerequisite for starting a family. “I don’t think you need to be married to have kids,” she retorted. “I feel like there are plenty of wonderful mothers out there and women, and also men, that take care of kids without having to be married. People that have gotten divorced for good causes. I don’t think you need to be married to have kids.”
This isn’t the first time Valkyrae has publicly discussed her thoughts on having children. In March 2023, she surprised her followers by tweeting about the possibility of adopting a baby with her mother. In her post, she referred to the potential adoptee as “another little sibling” and explained that she would handle the financial responsibilities while her mother would raise the child.
Valkyrae’s stance on having children has evolved over the years. Back in 2022, she expressed concerns about the challenges of raising a child, saying, “I just feel like there’s so many people on this planet already. For me, the experience of raising a child would be, probably, too difficult.” Her current perspective, while still cautious about the work/life balance, indicates a shift towards openness about starting a family.
Valkyrae’s recent reflections on motherhood echo similar sentiments shared by fellow streamer Pokimane. During a 2024 video with QTCinderella, Pokimane admitted to experiencing “baby fever” but also expressed ambivalence about the timing. “I know I kind of want a baby, but I don’t want a baby,” Pokimane said. “Like, I want a baby.” She ultimately concluded that she sees herself starting a family in her “mid-thirties,” but for now, she remains focused on her career.
The discussions by both Valkyrae and Pokimane highlight the evolving attitudes among female content creators towards balancing personal desires and professional commitments. Valkyrae’s candidness about her feelings and her rejection of traditional norms around marriage and motherhood reflect a broader trend of redefining family structures in contemporary society. As she continues to navigate her career and personal aspirations, Valkyrae’s journey resonates with many of her followers who face similar dilemmas.
