The shoreline was included in the state park in October 2002. MacKerricher State Park is 2,299 acres in size and used to be part of the Mendocino Indian Reservation. It was formerly a logging and shipping business. Glass Beach, despite its transformation into a beautiful coastline, was created as a result of years of garbage dumping into the coastline area. The area of the beach was known as The Dumps in the early twentieth century. Glass, trash, and even cars were thrown into this region by locals. These dumps began to fill up in the 1940s. Until 1967, the location of Glass Beach was an open dump. While the State of California led clean-up operations, some glass and pottery remnants remained. The waves eroded the leftover glass and pottery fragments, transforming them into smooth pebbles.
