Police interrogation video of YNW Melly has surfaced in connection with his arrest for a 2015 gunshot near a local high school. A video of a 16-year-old YNW Melly being questioned by police went viral on Sunday (June 18). The video, obtained in its entirety by XXL on Monday (June 19), shows the shoeless rapper fielding questions from officers in an interrogation room shortly after he was arrested in 2015 and charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon along with a count of discharging a firearm in public for firing a gun at an audience of people near Vero Beach High School. During the nearly two-hour questioning, investigators question YNW Melly about the shooting.

During the back and forth, both sides’ frustrations boil over. Detectives attempt to elicit an explanation from Melly by asking if he shot at people in self-defence. Melly confirms this, explaining that one of the kids pulled a revolver on him. He provides the cops with the person’s last name and describes the gun that was drawn on him as a 38 revolver. Detectives are having difficulty acquiring more information from the artist after that. One of the cops called Melly a liar after being dissatisfied with the rapper’s explanations about the location of the gun used in the killing.

I admire you, but I can’t discuss too much…That’s going to get someone else in trouble. The cops then leave YNW Melly in the interrogation room to search for the gun he claimed was in a storm drain. Melly starts hopping around and throwing punches in the air as soon as the investigators depart. He then repeatedly mimes shooting a gun and dances around rhyming as if he’s at a concert. A heated exchange takes place between YNW Melly and the next detective as he questions Melly about the gun used in the crime. Melly refuses to answer him, despite being threatened with witness tampering charges. Melly shoots back at the detective, “Charge me then.” Do you consider yourself a gangster? You ain’t nothing, dude, says the detective. Melly concludes the interview by stating that he shot in self-defense and refused to tell authorities where the pistol is. Finally, he is led out in handcuffs. No one was injured in the October 20, 2015 shooting. YNW Melly received a one-year prison sentence because he was still a minor at the time of the crime. He completed his GED while incarcerated. It was at this period that he wrote his breakthrough single “Murder on My Mind.”
