Stephen Sondheim, the most important artist in the 20th century in musical theatre dies at 91 and left everyone in shock. Artists from the film, television, and theatre industry pay tribute to Stephen, who reinvented the American music has left this world. Ariana Debose was one of the first to tweet about this and she said it feels like it is the end of an era. She said that Stephen set the standard of the American musical and prays for his soul to rest in peace.

Many other celebs tweeted for him as they feel that it is a loss for the industry to lose such a gem.

Who is Stephen Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim, the legendry artist, has won many medals and his works and achievements are enumerable. His earliest success was in the 1950s, West Side Story and Gypsy through the 1990s. His famous works as a composer and lyricist include Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), and more.

He was an influential composer- lyrists of the last half of the 20th century. Mr. Sondheim has won an Academy Award, Grammy award eight times, Tony Awards eight times, Lifetime Achievement award. He was also awarded by Former President Barack Obama with Presidential Medal Of Freedom in 2015.

The reason for the legend’s death is unknown. Stephen’s lawyer and friend, F. Richard Pappas declared about the news of Sondheim’s death. He also mentioned that reason for sudden death can not be due to illness. Mr. Richard added that he celebrated Thanksgiving and had dinner with his friends. Stephen married Jeffery Scott Romley in 2017 and was living with him. He was found dead at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on 26 November 2021.

Hugh Jackman and More Pay Tribute To Stephen Sondheim

Hugh Jackman, famous for his marvel superhero action films pays tribute to legendary composer on Twitter. He tweeted, every time a persona comes that fundamentally changes the entire art form and Stephen Sondheim did it, he was one of those. Hugh is an experienced musical theatre performer as well. Hugh Jackman added that he is full of gratitude for all his works and things that Stephen gave him and millions are mourning. He sent prayer and love to the family and friends of Mr. Stephen.

Wilson Cruz, a Broadway actor called Stephen a Master, a Legend, an Icon and stated that it was a privilege to be part of standing ovation at Company, a revival of Sondheim work on Broadway. Wilson said that Mr. Stephen changed the world and proves to be an inspiration for what he has provided for generations and he is thankful for that. Company Director- Marianne Elliott, tweeted that the industry has lost Shakespeare of musical theatre. She added that he was the most generous collaborator having the greatest spirit. He always accepted the change and it was a joy to work with him because he knew that theatre evolves with time.

Darren Criss, actor and singer wrote a lyrical homage to Mr. Stephen. He wrote Thankyou so much | for something between | ridiculous and sublime |. He also mentions a hashtag in his tweet #StephenSondheim.

Idina Menzel, tweeted Goodbye dear sir and all will try to make Mr. Stephen proud. Debbie Allen wrote about the legend, prolific composer, and lyricist who left us a legacy to always remember and sing forever.

Tony Award also tweeted from his official handle that he left us with so many words but none of them will do justice. Goodbye old pal. Sharing a video Tony Awards stated that Thankyou Stephen Sondheim for brilliance in theatre and for sharing his music with the world. Another establishment, the American Theatre Wing also paid tribute by sharing a clip and expressed gratitude to Mr. Stephen for paving the way for so many composers and theatre-makers. And all will always remember generosity, inspiration, and what he gave to the Wing and World.

Anna Kendrick who appeared in one of the adaptations in 2014 of Into The Woods by Stephen tweeted that performing his work was the greatest privilege for her career. The loss is devastating. She also shared lyrics from the show, YOU DECIDE WHAT IS RIGHT, YOU DECIDE WHAT IS GOOD…..JUST REMEMBER.
