Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney admits she still has trouble sleeping more than a month after the Bud Light backlash began. Bud Light angered many by sending Mulvaney a personalized can to help her celebrate 365 days since she began her gender transition in April. Since then, Anheuser-Busch has been hit with boycotts, condemnations, and public outcry from the likes of Kid Rock, Donald Trump, etc. Online hate has been directed at the influencer because of the brief collaboration. Despite the partnership, Anheuser-Busch has distanced itself, with CEO Brendan Whitworth stating in a statement that the beer brand has never intended to be part of a discussion that divides people.

After opening up about her struggles over the past month, Mulvaney appears to have received a career boost. Mulvaney had 10.8 million followers on TikTok before the controversy in early April owing to her Day 365 of Girlhood video series charting her transition. When the controversy began, she had 1.76 million Instagram followers. According to the social media statistics website Social Blade, both of these accounts had significantly increased their follower numbers by the middle of April.

Dylan Mulvaney, a transwoman and social media influencer, said she has “trouble sleeping” after the backlash Bud Light received for making her a spokesperson. During an episode of the “Dear Schuyler” podcast, the trans woman confessed that she hasn’t been sleeping well because of the backlash against the company’s decision. Furthermore, she noted that she is trying to have “grace” for her critics despite her frustration at attacks on her and the beer brand. More than a month before Mulvaney made her appearance, Bud Light and parent company Anheuser-Busch decided to make her a spokesperson, even printing her face on a commemorative Bud Light can. There was an intense backlash from American consumers who saw the move as a way for the beer brand to seek out a more progressive audience. In response, celebrities terminated contracts with the brand, other celebrities engaged in viral protests of the brand, and conservative consumers abandoned the beer altogether. As a result of the boycott, Bud Light lost billions of dollars in market value.

A report by Fox News Digital noted that Bud Light experienced four consecutive weeks of losses in April, with in-store sales falling 26% during the week of April 22. As a result of the fallout, Anheuser-Busch distanced itself from Mulvaney, and Bud Light marketing vice president Alissa Heinerscheid and Daniel Blake, who oversees mainstream marketing for Anheuser-Busch, took a leave of absence. Most of the consumer anger has been directed at Mulvaney, who admitted that it has gotten to her in the podcast. This week, the trans woman claimed that she was having trouble sleeping on the pro-LGBTQ podcast. Additionally, Mulvaney noted that she has had to learn how to deal with hundreds of thousands of people who dislike me. According to the transgender influencer, however, criticism and scrutiny have been “a blessing.” She said, In a weird way, it has helped break the people-pleasing mentality because there is no way to win over those people. Additionally, Mulvaney said she’s trying to offer grace to her critics. She said, But the people who are targeting us right now, I’m trying to find grace for them because I know that it was planted by someone else. We can only hope that they will see the beauty and humanity of identity, rather than try to destroy it.
