Simon Cowell Death Hoax Circulates After Liam Payne’s Passing: Here’s the Truth Behind Viral Rumors.
Social media was recently flooded with rumors claiming the death of Simon Cowell, the iconic producer and former judge of shows like The X Factor and America’s Got Talent. The claims, fueled by viral posts on Facebook, were especially impactful due to their proximity to the tragic news of former One Direction member Liam Payne’s passing. Payne, whose career Cowell helped launch, passed away in a tragic accident earlier this month. Despite the online buzz, the rumors of Cowell’s passing have been confirmed to be entirely false—Cowell is alive and well.
The hoax appears to have originated from the Facebook page B58 News, which on October 20 shared a post with a somber image depicting a news anchor appearing teary-eyed alongside a casket adorned with flowers. The image was accompanied by bold text that read, “DIED TODAY.” In the caption, the post alleged, “Very sad, 10 minutes ago in Chicago, ‘America’s Got Talent’ Simon Cowell, he has been confirmed as…” without completing the sentence. The vague language and emotional images quickly stirred concern among fans, who shared the post widely, assuming it to be true. Numerous comments from distraught fans flooded the post, with messages of shock and sympathy. One user wrote, “OMG this is really shocking. He was too good and young…RIP SAFE IN THE ARMS OF JESUS,” while others shared heartfelt condolences for Cowell’s “family and friends.”
However, contrary to these claims, Cowell was seen at the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards just days later on October 21, where he attended as a presenter. During the event, Cowell personally presented the Child of Courage Award to young Aiyla Mota and paid tribute to his friend and former Mirror
Simon Cowell, now 65, has been targeted by death hoaxes several times in recent years. Most notably, in January 2023, singer Sinitta, a longtime friend and former partner of Cowell, was shocked to receive messages claiming he had died. She swiftly refuted the hoax on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “This is a terrible prank…Simon is NOT dead people—he is very much alive and well.”
The online reaction to this latest hoax highlights the persistence of such misleading reports, which often cause real distress for fans and friends alike. Cowell’s October 19 tribute to Payne, in which he described him as “kind, funny, sweet, thoughtful, talented,” has also fueled public emotion, making the timing of the hoax even more impactful. The tragic loss of Payne, who passed away at 31 after an accidental fall in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, has deeply affected fans, amplifying their sensitivity to additional tragic news regarding those connected to One Direction.
Simon Cowell is far from the only celebrity to fall victim to death hoaxes. Other high-profile figures, including Justin Bieber, Will Smith, DJ Khaled, and Oprah Winfrey, have faced similar rumors in the past, demonstrating the prevalence of misinformation about public figures in the digital age.
As Cowell’s recent appearance confirms, he remains active and engaged in his work and charitable contributions. Fans are advised to verify such news through trusted sources, as the internet remains fertile ground for rumors and hoaxes that can often lead to unnecessary confusion and heartache.
