After filming a music video on their cell phones and uploading it to YouTube, two prisoners at Michigan’s Macomb Correctional Facility may face additional jail time. Following the discovery of the video on Tuesday (November 29), state prison officials and the Michigan State Police launched an investigation. Cellphones and cameras are prohibited inside the prison. During one portion of the video, one inmate appears to be talking on a cell phone, indicating they had more than one. According to officials, the video was taken in September, but only posted online recently – where it racked up almost 60,000 views before being removed.
Having phones in state prisons is incredibly dangerous, particularly since they can be connected to the internet, which means they can be used for escapes, harassment of witnesses, or placing ‘hits’ on inmates or outsiders,” said Chris Gautz from the Michigan Department of Corrections. On November 3, a video from Macomb Correctional Facility in Michigan was uploaded to YouTube. Two weeks after the rap video was posted, guards conducting a routine search found a YouTube link on a piece of paper. A Michigan State Police and prison investigation has now been launched to determine how the inmates were able to use a cell phone inside their cells to record and upload the video. They are now in segregation and could face prison time, according to authorities. According to the authorities, cell phones were smuggled into the prison with at least two cell phones, according to the video with over 60,000 views. A prisoner also appears to capture an image of a guard without the guard’s apparent knowledge, according to Free Press.
They were caught two weeks after posting the video online on November 3, where they remain undisguised throughout. The Michigan Department of Corrections Chris Gautz, who spoke to Fox News, said: We went online and found the video had been recorded inside the prison. Prisoners in the video did not disguise themselves in any way, so staff recognized them and confronted them in their cells. As Chris Gautz stated, cell phones are considered dangerous and illegal in prisons because they can be used for untoward purposes. The names of the inmates in the video have not been released by Michigan officials. According to Fox News, one of them has been convicted of armed robbery and the other of second-degree murder. The correctional facility has been involved in controversy before. The warden was suspended and barred from entering the prison while the investigation continues after an inmate died from an overdose there in 2021, and two inmates were murdered there this year. The police vow to find out how the phones were obtained.
