Rapper ScHoolboy Q has expressed his discontent with comments made by billionaire entrepreneur Michael Rubin regarding hate culture within the Black community, calling them “outta control.” Following a wave of online backlash and personal reflection, Rubin has since issued an apology, acknowledging his misstep in addressing the topic.

ScHoolboy Q’s Reaction to Michael Rubin’s Statements

On Wednesday, August 14th, ScHoolboy Q took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice his concerns over Rubin’s statements about the Black community. Earlier that day, Michael Rubin, the founder of Fanatics, had appeared on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club to discuss a range of topics, including his high-profile friendships and famous Fourth of July parties. During the interview, Rubin also touched on a sensitive issue related to Meek Mill, specifically addressing rumors about the rapper’s sexuality that had surfaced after a viral video from a 2021 tennis match.

In his defense of Meek Mill, Rubin broached the subject of hate culture within the Black community. “When I see the narrative of a really good friend of mine like Meek, there’s not one gay bone in his body,” Rubin said. He went on to question why people would fabricate stories that could hurt his friend. Rubin then shifted focus to a broader point about what he perceives as a tendency within the Black community to turn against one another.

“One thing I’ve learned about Black culture that I don’t like is that Black hate on hate. It’s horrible,” Rubin remarked during the interview.

Following the interview, a clip of Rubin’s comments quickly made the rounds online, leading ScHoolboy Q to respond publicly. The rapper posted the clip on X, captioning it, “BraH…… I’m cool on this app. tHis sH*t outta control dog [crying face emojis]. NO SUCH THING AS BLACK ON BLACK ANYTHING WTF.”

ScHoolboy Q didn’t stop there. He posted a since-deleted tweet that appeared to mock Rubin’s take on the issue, saying, “YOU KNOW WAT I DONT LIKE ABOUT U NIERS? I HATE WHEN U NIERS BE ACTING LIKE NI**ERS [crying laughter emoji].. basically.” However, the rapper later deleted the tweet, explaining in another post, “Dat do look crazy don’t it [laughing emoji]….ill delete it.”

Michael Rubin’s Apology

By the following day, Michael Rubin took to X to apologize for his controversial remarks. In his post, Rubin explained that he had received a call from a close friend who had helped him better understand why his comments were problematic. Rubin acknowledged that while his intentions were to encourage unity, it was not his place to make sweeping statements about Black culture.

“I got a phone call from one of the people I have the most respect for in the world,” Rubin tweeted. “They told me while they appreciate my intention, it’s not my place to speak on Black culture. I get it and really appreciate the input! My intention was to say how important it is that we need to uplift each other, stop hate on each other, and push each other to win, and always root for each other’s success! My bad, Much love and appreciate the feedback [two heart emojis].”

Meek Mill’s Response

Meek Mill, who had been at the center of the initial discussion, also weighed in on Rubin’s apology. In a tweet, Meek expressed that Rubin likely shouldn’t have made those comments publicly, explaining that conversations about violence and struggles within the Black community are complex.

“Rubin shouldn’t be saying that type stuff out loud,” Meek tweeted. “A Black man suppose to but nobody saying it… It’s like we only collab on songs women and parties… he be hearing my friends getting murdered like why Meek, I can’t explain it to him in a sensible way!”

The controversy highlights the complexities of discussing cultural issues across racial lines, even when intentions may be good. Rubin’s quick apology and reflection suggest an awareness of the sensitivity required when addressing such topics.

As the conversation continues to unfold, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting the nuances within communities, particularly when speaking from an outsider’s perspective.
