Sam Smith’ “Self-Partnered” Rumor Debunked as Fake
2 min readA recent rumor claiming that Grammy-winning artist Sam Smith announced they are “self-partnered” or in a relationship with themselves has been debunked. The claim originated from a satirical Facebook page and quickly went viral across various social media platforms.
The speculation began on November 17 when the Facebook page Wakefield News shared a post stating, “Sam Smith has clarified that he is SELF-PARTNERED… actually in a relationship with themselves.” The post included a photo of Smith wearing a black kaftan and diamond accessories, generating over 300 reactions and nearly 250 comments.
However, the rumor has been confirmed as baseless. Sam Smith, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, has not made any such statement. Wakefield News, known for its parody content, clearly states in its bio that nothing on its page should be taken seriously.
The rumor gained additional traction on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), with a conspiracy theorist account sharing a TikTok video that seemed to imply the same claim. The video contrasted Smith’s earlier performances with their recent concert appearances, sensationally commenting on their supposed transformation in the entertainment industry. However, the video offered no evidence to substantiate the self-partnership claim.
Sam Smith just came out & announced he’s “self partnered” meaning they/them are in a relationship itself.

Meme pages such as British Feed, which explicitly label their content as satirical, also made similar posts. Additionally, fact-checking website Snopes confirmed the rumor as a parody.
This isn’t the first time false claims about Smith’s identity or relationship status have circulated. Earlier this year, a rumor suggested Smith had come out as “semi-bisexual,” which was similarly debunked.
Smith, who publicly came out as gay in 2014, has been open about their journey of self-discovery. In October 2017, they came out as genderqueer, and by 2019, they revealed their non-binary identity. Over the years, Smith has been romantically linked with notable individuals, including actor Brandon Flynn and, most recently, designer Christian Cowan, with whom they appeared at the 2024 Met Gala.
As of now, Sam Smith has not commented on their relationship status, and the viral claims remain unfounded.
