According to TMZ, the Erie County Coroner’s Office has determined that the fatal incident was a suicide. Emily Matson, a renowned and award-winning news anchor & reporter at WICU-TV in Erie, PA, has died. She was 42 years old. Lilly Broadcasting, the parent company of NBC affiliate WICU, acknowledged her death on December 11 but provided no other details. Matson started her career in the early 2000s as an intern at Erie’s WJET-TV.

After joining WICU, she produced the station’s morning show for two years before becoming an on-air reporter. “I was sad to depart the morning crew, but thrilled when I was offered the reporter job I’d been eyeing,” Matson said on her bio page. “In my first year as a general assignment reporter, I covered crime, and I absolutely enjoy it!” My goal is to make an impact on the Erie community by meeting new people and telling stories that affect everyone every single day.” She co-anchored WICU’s nightly 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts and was named Outstanding Spot News by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters two times.

According to reports from The Erie Times-News and The New York Post, the county coroner has determined that the cause of death for Pennsylvania news anchor Emily Matson was suicide. Matson tragically passed away on Monday morning in Fairview Township after being struck by a train. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook, as reported by the Post on Tuesday, described the evidence surrounding the 42-year-old local news anchor’s death as “unquestionable.” Expressing shock and a sense of overwhelming sadness, Erie News Now News Director Scott MacDowell paid tribute to Matson, stating, “It is with an extremely heavy heart that we were informed of the sudden passing of our cherished Erie News Now news anchor Emily Matson.”

The Lilly Broadcasting family also released a statement on Monday, expressing their sorrow: “Emily was a ray of sunshine in our newsroom, sharing information with the same enthusiasm and love she had for the Erie community and Northwest Pennsylvania.
