On Sunday, June 19, Paul Haggis was detained in Italy on charges of sexual assault. According to reports, an unidentified lady has accused the 69-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker and screenwriter of forcing her to participate in sexual intercourse with him for two days in Ostuni. The director is now in the city since he was slated to teach master workshops alongside Edward Norton and Michael Nozik at the ‘Allora Fest’ film festival this week.
This isn’t the first time Haggis has been accused of something. Several women have accused him of sexual misconduct in the past. In 2017, publicist Haleigh Breest filed a lawsuit against the director, alleging that he raped her in New York after a film screening in 2013. Three more women came out with allegations of sexual misconduct and assault the next year as a result of the lawsuit. Haggis, on the other hand, has disputed all of the charges leveled against him.
He was also embroiled in a high-profile fight with the Church of Scientology, which he left after they accused him of publicly supporting Proposition 8, which made it illegal for same-sex couples to marry in Cali fornia, according to CNN. He expressed his displeasure in a letter to the church’s spokesman, Tommy Davis. “I called and emailed and asked you, as the official spokesman of the church, to condemn their conduct,” the letter stated. The letter was initially released on ex-Scientologist Mark Rathbun’s blog. “I told you I couldn’t be a member of an organization that supported gay-bashing in good conscience.”
