Sam Smith has found himself in hot water on social media after he used a new genderless word ‘fisher-them’ in a recent interview.

Here is everything you need to know.

Sam Smith shares the dream of becoming a ‘fisher-them’

Sam Smith recently sat down with BBC’s ‘The One Show’ for an interview following his controversial performance at the BRIT Awards 2023.

However, he was slammed on the internet for using the new term ‘fisher-them’ during the interview.

The show’s host Ronan Keating asked Smith whether he enjoyed fishing.

Moreover, the Grammy-winning artist responded with, ‘I do love fishing, yes! Yeah, I’d love to be a fisher-them.’

In addition, Keating went on to question, ‘What, like a fly fisherman?’

Smith replied by saying, ‘I’d be any type of fisher-them. I think I would like to, one day, I’d just like to end my days fishing. Like sitting on a bank.’

Additionally, he continued, ‘I do it on the sea and I do it on lakes. I’ve never done it alone, someone’s almost taught me.’

Besides that, Smith’s recent online bashing comes after his high-profile appearance on the BRITs red carpet.

The 30-year-old artist was trolled online for wearing an inflatable black jumpsuit and huge shoulder pads at the event.

He also donned a pair of high heels and matched them with black gloves. Additionally, he completed the outfit by accessorizing himself with pearl earrings.

Furthermore, Smith faced massive criticism earlier this year for his performance of the song ‘Unholy’ alongside Kim Petras at this year’s Grammy Awards.

Many users deemed the performance as ‘satanic and offensive.’

Viewers of One Show were left perplexed by Sam Smith’s use of the new term, ‘fisher-them.’

They took to Twitter to slam the Stay With Me singer for making up the previously unheard term.

A user wrote, ‘Sam Smith…I would like to end my days as a “Fisher- them.” Can’t wait for his next song..all those pronouns will be some tongue twisters.’

Someone else added, ‘Sam Smith calling Fishermen- Fisher them. so I’m guessing it’s Firethem, Policethem, or Postthem. What nonsense.’

She tweeted, ‘He really will say anything for attention. Fisherthem is the most ridiculous thing possible. He knows it that’s why he is smiling. Great for his album promotion though.’
