Kardashian was approached with the idea during last year’s gala and was considering it if she hadn’t worn the now-famous Balenciaga t-shirt dress in September.
“After the gala in September of last year, I had the idea. What would I have done for the American theme if it hadn’t been the Balenciaga look? I wondered. What do you consider to be the most American thing you can think of? And that’s Marilyn Monroe,” Kim Kardashian said of her preparations for Monday’s “Gilded Glamour and White Tie” premiere “gala with a theme.
In preparation for the star-studded event, Kardashian, 41, told BFF and Vogue guest host La La Anthony that she lost 16 pounds in just three weeks.

Monroe’s dress, a flesh-colored, figure-hugging column gown inspired by a Bob Mackie sketch for costume designer Jean-Louis. It is covered in rhinestones and caused a stir when she revealed it, seemingly nude, after shedding her white fur to sing a sultry rendition of “Happy Birthday” to JFK in front of a crowd of nearly 15,000 at Madison Square Garden.
In America: An Anthology of Fashion, a 2022 Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, inspired the night’s theme. Obtaining Monroe’s original gown, on the other hand, was no easy task. To do so, Kardashian contacted Orlando’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, which purchased the gown in a $4.8 million auction in 2016 that still holds the record for the most expensive dress ever sold at auction.

Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend, Pete Davidson, attended the Met Gala on Monday night. Despite the fact that the two are no strangers to the Met Gala. This is, however, the first time the two have walked the red carpet together. The Saturday Night Live comedian wore a black suit and tie with a white shirt. As they posed side-by-side at the event, the two exchanged smiles.
While the gown was originally scheduled for Monday’s gala, Ripley’s has big plans for it now that it has been stripped from the Kardashians star. Starting Memorial Day weekend, Monroe’s iconic gown will be on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Hollywood for a limited time.
