Meghan Markle recounts the tale when her son, Archie barely escaped a fire while they were on the Sussexes’ royal tour to South Africa in the autumn of 2019.

Meghan Markle opens up about the incident

Meghan Markle recently debuted with the first episode of her long-awaited Spotify podcast called ‘Archetypes.’

The 41-year-old actress was joined alongside professional athlete Serena Williams for the debut installment. 

During the conversation, Markle talked about how Archie’s nanny saved him from a fire.

Markle mentioned that Archie’s bedroom caught on fire while she and Prince Harry were out attending an official royal engagement.

She claimed, ‘There was this moment where I’m standing on a tree stump and I’m giving this speech to women and girls. We finish the engagement, we get in the car and they say, “There’s been a fire at the residence. There’s been a fire in the baby’s room.”‘

The Duchess of Sussex further mentioned that her son’s caregiver Lauren saved Archie by taking him downstairs to eat a midnight snack before the fire.

Markle shared, ‘Lauren was in floods of tears. She was supposed to put Archie down for his nap and she just said, “You know what? Let me just go get a snack downstairs.”‘

She further said, ‘There was no smoke detector. Someone happened to just smell smoke down the hallway, went in, fire extinguisher. He was supposed to be sleeping in there.’

Meghan Markle’s podcast which was first announced back in 2020 released its debut episode featuring Serena Williams on Tuesday 23rd August.

Furthermore, the official website of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been remodeled to promote Markle’s new venture.

The site includes a black and white picture of Markle with a message that reads, ‘The podcast where we explore and subvert the labels that try to hold women back.’

During the first episode, Markle and the tennis icon talked about several topics including motherhood. 

They further discussed the implications of a woman’s ambition as compared to men. Hence, the episode is titled, ‘The Misconception of Ambition.’

Meanwhile, UC Berkley professor Laura Kay received mixed reviews for the show.

A Twitter user said,  ‘Brilliant podcast! Loved every minute.’

While another commented saying, ‘So in other words, privileged and elite has a conversation with privileged and elite. Together they complain about what it’s like to be privileged and elite.’
