Mariah Carey’s bid to gain exclusive rights to the phrase, ‘Queen of Christmas’ is denied after a rival blocks her.
Here is everything you need to know.
Mariah Carey loses her bid to trademark the title ‘Queen of Christmas’
The United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board has denied Mariah Carey’s legal attempt to trademark, ‘Queen of Christmas.’
In addition, the agency has also ruled out the pop diva’s appeal to have exclusive rights to the name ‘Princess Christmas’ and ‘QOC’ earlier this month.
Carey hinted last year that she wants to use similar titles to use on a range of her merchandise. It consisted of albums, fragrances, pet accessories, sunglasses, and much more.
Hence, she further went ahead to trademark these monikers through her company, called Lotion LLC.
However, she found herself locked in a legal battle with another ‘Queen of Christmas.’
Singer Elizabeth Chan filed an opposition to Carey’s application in August. Moreover, other artists such as Darlene Love who sang Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) also spoke against the 52-year-old singer’s reasons.
Meanwhile, Chan’s attorney Louis Tompros of WilmerHale released a statement following their victory.
He said, ‘This was a classic case of trademark bullying. We are pleased with the victory, and delighted that we were able to help Elizabeth fight back against Carey’s overreaching trademark registrations.’

More about Elizabeth Chan
Elizabeth Chan’s connection with the Christmas holiday runs deep. She was baptized on 25th December and named her daughter Noelle which is the French word for Christmas.
Moreover, she claims her grandmother to be the original ‘Queen of Christmas.’ Although she also refers to herself with the same title on all her social media handles.
Besides that, Chan is mostly recognized for her festive songs that she releases all year round.
Meanwhile, in 2018, The New Yorker dubbed Chan ‘The Queen of Christmas’ in one of their profiles.
Furthermore, she just dropped her latest album which is titled, ’12 Months of Christmas.’ It comes after her victory against Mariah Carey in the trademark case.
Additionally, she talked about it during a press release.
Chan said, ‘Christmas is a season of giving, not the season of taking. It is wrong for an individual to attempt to own and monopolize a nickname like Queen of Christmas for the purposes of abject materialism.’
She added, ‘My goal in taking on this fight was to stand up to trademark bullying. Not just to protect myself, but also to protect future Queens of Christmas.’
